Description
,aient @imita 4HENRY-IB. Trittau Y, or MEDINA, O Hio.'
Len-m Pawn; No. 106,000, zaad August 2, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN" IAUCETS.
lThe Schedule referred `to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
This invention relates to improvements .in faucets,l
and eonsistsf-n a combination with the hollow plug'1 through'which the liquid isdischarged, of a turningplate and operating devices therefor, to covergtlie holel at the end when the plug is closed, to prevent 4'ilies and other insects from entering, (being attracted'by tlie liquid,) and being washed out with the liquid into the 1 vessel receiving it'when the faucet is opened. Figure' 1'is an end elevation of myimproved faucet, and Figure 2 is a top view of the same.
.Similar letters ot' reference indicate corresponding parts.
A is the spill or tube,'whicl1 is attached to the vessel from which'the liquid is .t0 be drawn, and which holds the turning plug B, which opens and closes the escape-passage, discharging through the lower end ot' it. v
In the ordinary arrangement of these plugs, the discharging-nozzles at' the lower 'ends remain open, and dies and other insects, attracted, by theliquids, gather ltherein in warm weather in considerable numbers, and are'washedout by and with the liquid each time -the faucet is opened, much to the injury of the liquid.
I propose, therefore, to arrange a turning plate or gate, C,'to swing under the nozzle of the plug B, when it is closed, and cover the hole, to prevent the insects from entering, and to swing away when the plug is opened. p r
I therefore attach the plate G to a spindle, D, arranged in a support parallel with theplug B, and so that the plate will be supported against .theend of said plug B, when brought under it; and in order to causeit to bear always against the said plug snugly, it may be attached to the spindle4 D adj ustably, so as to be adjusted thereon from time to time, as may-bc required.
In this yexample the spindle is borne in a bearing, Efattached to the cylindrical T-headl F of the tube A, and it is inserted from the top; anda spiral spring, G, is placed around it, between theV lower` end of the bearing and the top of the plate C, to 'prevent the spindle and the plate C from rising too high.
To eifect the turning of 4this plate simultaneously with and by the turningof the plug, I have geared the spindle D with the plug, by the two toothed wheels H, as shown, by ,which the said plate is opened and closed when the-plug is opened and closed,
Having thus described my invention,
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentthe gate C,- spindle D, spring G, and gears H, substantially as shown and described.
