MANICURE-FILE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
rammen apr. sa, rara.
Application filed April 27, 1912. Serial No. 693,639.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, JOHN F. BrnNns, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Manicure-Files, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to manicure devices, and particularly to a file for manicuring the linger-nails.
The object of the present invention is to provide a simple, eflicient device, which is readily adjustable to fingers of different sizes, so that the file may be oscillated across the edge of the linger-nail for abrading and shaping the same.
The invention consists of the parts and the construction and combination of parts as hereinafter more fully described and claimed, having reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a side elevation of the manicure file. Fig. 2 is a plan View of the same as applied.
In its illustrated embodiment, the invention comprises a ring 2, or other equivalent device, adapted to encompass a finger at some convenient distance from the end of the finger; the ring 2 in the present instance being shown as having overlapping ends 3 and made of such material as will yield or contract to fit fingers of divers proportions.
Projecting diametrically from the ring 2 are pins or trunnions t, upon which are mounted sleeves 5, loosely turnable upon the trunnions 4. Fivoted upon the sleeves 5 for free, oscillating movement are arms or bars 6; these being mounted upon pivots 7 projecting from the sides of the sleeves 5. The arms 6 project freely to one side of the ring 2; the outer portions of the arms being slotted, as at 8. Extending between the walls of the slots are pins 9 surrounded partly by springs 1() reacting at one end againstI the end wall of the slots 8, and the outer ends of the springs bearing upon a file l1 which is perforated adjacent to its ends, as at 12, so as to ride freely upon the pins 9. The file 11 is preferably concaved, as at 11a, on its surfaces, so that it will cover a considerable portion of the linger-nail during its operation over the same. The function of the springs 10 is to thrust the file 1l away from the ring 2, and in operation a person, when manicuring the nails, forces the file ll inwardly to compress the springs l0 until the file l1 contacts with the edge of the finger-nail; the file being provided with a suit-able handle 13 whereby it may be readily controlled not only in its motion to compress the springs l0 by which it is forced against the edge of the fingernail, but by means of the handle 13 the file with its bearing arms 6 may be osc-illated about the fulcrums 4- of the ring 2. Meanwhile, the file 1l is pressed firmly against the edge of the nail, and by the oscillating movement of t-he arms 6 the nail will be manicured; the desired curvature being given to the nail by the operator according to the pressure and period of time with which the file is held against the edge of the nail at different portions. f
Manifestly the file may be mounted in various ways and suitably connected to the ring 2, which has for its principal function the supporting of the fulcrumed ends of the arms 6 on the finger, while the outer ends of the arms 6 with the file 1l may be oscillated as desired.
The device is equally applicable to each of the fingers on either of the hands and may be readily applied to fingers of various proportions, both as to their length and to their circumference; the split ring 2 being sufficiently yieldable to expand or contract to fit divers fingers, and the springs l0 which normally thrust the file l1 outwardly may be compressed by the operator as desired to shape the nail. 4
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and' desire to secure by Letters Patent isl. In a manicure file, the combination of a ring applicable to a finger, a file extendable over the end of the finger, means for supporting the tile from the ring so that the file may move across the end of the finger, and means for holding the file in abrading Contact with the nail.
2. In a manicure file, the combination of a ring adjustable to fingers of various sizes, a file, means connected with the ring for Supporting the file, and means by which the In testimony whereof I have hereunto set file may be moved along the edge of the nail.
