Description

' nitidi site WILLIAMS. RYERSON, GEORGE STANOLIFF, AND OLIVER T. MGINTOSH, k0F NEW YORK,
or SAME PLAGE;
` N. Y., ASSIGNORS TO THEMSELVES, STEPHEN GTRIPP, AND CHARLES CHAMBERS,
l Letters Patent No. 105,983, dated August 2, 1870.
AThe Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same To allwhom 'it may concern:
- Beit known that we,` W1LLrAM S. RYERsoN,
GEORGE STANcLiFF, and OLIVER T. MoINTosH, ot' the city and State of New York, have invented and made a new and useful Improvement in Boat-detaching Apparatus; and the following is declared to be a, i correct description of the same.
This invention-` is an improvement uponth'ose for which Letters'` Patent No. 91,488 and 101,665 were grantedJune.15,1869,'and April 5,1870, respectively. p i Our invention is for facilitating the disconnection of the boat, preventing accidental'disconnection, and ai lowing for the removal ofthe disconnecting apparatus p with facility, when it isfdesired4 to use the ordinary blocks orfalls in hoisting .the boat to the davits.
Our special features` of invention relate to a sliding j spring `bolt and lever, coinjbined with the horn and Vguard-finger, (ofaforesaidpaten ts`,) whereby the disconnecting of the parts is effect-ed with facility, so that the horns can be turned for throwing off, simultane- .ously, `the rings of the suspending chains. WeV also provideet'safetyfbolt to prevent accident while hangingat the davits.
In the drawing 1 Figure 4 is a side and partially sectional view of the boat-detaching apparatus, and
`stances, where the ropes go around. the sheaves, g,
there is a tendency to rotate the 'wholeapparatua when Y drawing up or lowering the fall; we therefore make lthe slinghfdouble, with the point of attachment for the fall above the shaft f, so` that the appar-` tus Lwillbe suspended, and "there will 'not be any risk `of the apparatus rotating by the-,action of the fall.
`'lhe point of attachment, 2, for' the said fall,is shown with an eye, s, into vwhich `the hook ofthe fail-block is passed at each end of the apparatus.
, This construction prevents the shaft f turning ac-V cidently, and we prefer touse the said eye s because it allows the falls to be unhoked'` from the det-aching apparatus and hooked directly to the boat, when said boat is tobe drawn out of the water..
It is tcbe understood that, when the detaching apparatushas been disconnected to facilitate t'ne .hoisting',it is to be replaced after the boat `has been swung or slung from the davits, so as to be in readiness for the detaching of the boat the next time.
In place of the eye s, a sheave or sheaves might be provided around a pin at 2, for the ropes of the fall to pass through. y
' Y The sliding bolt t is supported in the blocks u, and pressed forward by the spring 5 into a hole in the douforked to the fuicrum 7, is connected with this bolt t,
and vserves to withdraw the same and rotate the shaft f and horns when the boat is to be disconnected. y A safety-bolt, w, is provided at the other end of the apparatus, `the same sliding in lugs, 6 and 8, and havs ing a knob or lever, 9, that can be turned down on one side of the lug 8, to prevent the boltbeing drawn back accidentally, and this is also a safety to prevent the boat being lostthrough accident or careless handling of the lever "v when the boat is hanging at the davit's.
' The shaft f maybevvmade of metal' tubing, or4 of wood, or othermaterial, so as to insure lightness and strength. We claim as our invention- 1. -The double sling 7i, having the points of attachment, 2, for the fall above the shaft f, in combination with the horns a and guard-fingers I, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
2. The spring. b olt' t and lever rv, applied as speci- Vfied, in 4combination with the sling h, horns a, and
guard-fingers l, substantially as and for thepurpos'es y set forth.
In witness whereof Weuhave hereunto'set our signatures this 9th day of May, 1870.
WM. S. RYERSON.
GEO. STANOLIFF.
OLIVER T. MGINTOSH.
