BOAT-LASHING' DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 703,664, datedJuly 1, 1902. Application fiId NQvemher 6 1901. Serial No. 81,306. (No model.)
dent of Boston, in thecounty of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boat-Lash-' ing Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in boat-lashingdevices for the purpose of readily securinglife-boats on the decks of vessels and as readily detaching the same when desired to as will hereinafter be more fully shown and described, reference-being had to the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a sectional view of a'vessel, showing one of the boats lashed to the deck by myimproved device. Fig. 2 is a detail central longitudinal section of theimproved boatlashing device. Fig. 3 is a cross-section on the line 3 3 in Fig. 2; and Fig. 4 is a crosssection on the line 4 4, also shown in Fig. 2)

In Fig. 1, Arepresents the deck of a vessel A, on which E represents one of the davits, as usual.
C is one of the life-boats suspended from 4 the davits by means of ropes and pulleys in the usual manner. In devices of this kind the gunwale C of the boat 0 is usually secured to the deck of the vessel by means of' ropes and pulleys; but such boat-lashing devices are objectionable on account of delays in re-' leasing the life -boat when desired to be launched quickly.
My device is constructed with a view of quickly releasing the lashing devices preparatory to launching the boat, and it is constructed as follows: It consists of a metal hook d, adapted to be hooked onto the gunwale O of the boat 0. Said hook is made integral with a rod D, the lower end of which is screwthreaded, as shown at d in Fig. 2.
E is a sleeve, the interior upper end of which is screw-threaded at e to receive the screw-shank d, as shown in Fig. 2.
To the lower end of the sleeve E is connected a rod F, having made integral with its lower end a hook F, as shown in Fig. 2. The upper end of the rod F is provided with an annular groove f, adapted to receive pins or screws (1" 61, secured to the lower'end of the sleeve E, so as to permit the latter to be turned around the rod F, to which it is connected.
To the lower end of the hook F is pivoted at f" a latch F, which is normally held interlocked with an eyebolt G, secured to the deck A of the vessel, as shown.

To the upper portion of the bolt or spindle F is secured, by means of a pin h, the sleeve H, within which is contained a coiled spring I, the lower end of which presses against the upper end of a sleeve K, which is longitudinally adjustable on the rod F and normally forced downward on the latter, so as to hold the latch F" in the closed position inside of the sleeve K shown in Fig. 2.
To the lower end of the rod F is secured a spring L, the free end of which presses against the shank of the latch F.
If it is desired to release the latch F" from the eyebolt G, it is only necessaryio pull the sleeve K upward against the influence of its spring I until the lower end of said sleeve K passes bythe upper end of the latch F, when the latter is automatically moved by the in: fluence of the spring L to the unlocked position shown in dotted lines inFig. 2, when said latch may readily be detached'from the eyebolt G for the purpose of readily disconnecting the lashing device from the' life-boat preparatory to launching the latter.
' The operation of this my improved boatlashing device is as follows:,, After the boat 0 has been hoisted and suspended from the davits to the proper position above the deck A of thevessel, as usual, I place the hook D onto the gunwale C of the boat and move the sleeve K upward, so as to liberate the latch F", which is then inserted in the eyeboltG,
after which I swing said latchjto the locked position shown in Fig.2 and liberate the sleeve K, which is then forced by-the influence of the spring I to the position shown in then tighten the lashing device, preferably by takinghold of the sleeve H,and turn the screwthreaded sleeve E more or less around the screw-threaded rod D (1 until the proper strain on the lashing device is obtained.
If so desired, the lashing devices may first be hooked to the deck of the "essel and to the gunwale of thesuspendedlife-boat,which may afterward be hoisted by the davit ropes and pulleys until the boat is properly held in position by the lashing devices.
To quickly release the lashing device, it is only necessary to move the sleeve K upward suificiently to release the latch F, which is then forced outward by the spring L to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, when the hook F may readily be detached from the eyebolt G. The lashing device may then readily be removed from the gunwale of the boat, which latter may then be launched as usual.
The device is very simple in construction and operation, and by its use a boat may readily be lashed in position on the deck of a vessel and disconnected for launching in a very quick and expeditious manner, thereby saving valuable time in case of accidents, collisions, &c., when desired to launch a boat for life-saving or other purposes.
That I wish to secure by Letters Patent and claim is 1. The herein-described boat-lashing device, consisting in combination, of a hooked screw-threaded rod (1, d, D, an adjustable internally-screw-threaded sleeve E, a hooked rod F, rotatabl y connected to said sleeve, and provided with a pivoted latch F", a sleeve H, secured to the upper end of the rod F, and a longitudinally-adjustable spring-pressed latch-holding sleeve K, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The herein-described boat-lashing device, consisting in combination of a hooked screw-threaded rod, an adjustable internallyscrew-threaded sleeve E, a rod F, rotatably connected to said sleeve, a hook F, made integral with said rod F, a latch F, pivotally connected to said hook and means substantially as described for locking said latch in closed position as and for the purpose set forth.
