INVALIDS LIFT.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRANK I. BELLns, a citizen of the United States, residing at NoXen, in the county of Wyoming and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Invalids Lifts, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an improved invalids lift, for lifting an invalid from a bed to a chair and vice versa, the invention consisting in the construction, combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter de scribed and claimed.
The object of my invention is to provide an improved device of this character by means of which the nurse or attendant may readily lift an invalid from a bed to a chair and vice versa and without discomfort to the patient.
In the accompanying drawings :Figure l is a side elevation of an invalids lift constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan of the same. Figs. 3 and i are respectively detail front and rear elevations of the jacket, used in connection with my improved lift.
In accordance with my invention, I provide a lifting frame 1 which comprises standards 2 and a cross bar 3 which connects the upper ends of the standards. The standards are preferably formed of pieces of iron or other pipe of suitable length. The cross bars are also preferably formed of tubing. The cross bars are here shown as comprising a union or coupling 4.- having four radial arms 5 into which the sections 3 of the cross bars are screwed and the outer ends of the said cross bars are here shown as connected to the upper ends of the standards 2 by means of quadrant-shaped couplings 6. Hooks 7 depend from certain of the cross bars and support a curved track 8. A swinging arm 9 is pivotally connected at one end of one of the standards 2 and preferably by a T-coupling 0r sleeve 10. At the free end of the said swinging arm is a pulley 11 and at its inner or pivotal end is apulley 12. The standard 2 to which the said swinging arm is connected is also pro- Specification of Letters Patent.

vided with a winch 13 and a lifting cord let is attached to the winch and passes over the pulleys 11 and 12. The swinging arm has a traveling pulley or roller 15 which operates on the curved track 8 so that the free end of the swinging arm is supported and the swinging arm is adapted to be freely turned in any desired direction. I also, in connection with my improved lifting apparatus, provide a suitable jacket 16 which is open at the front side, provided at the sides with suitable fastening devices 17 and is adapted to be buttoned around the body of the patient, this jacket being fashioned so as to fit the patient. The upper end of the jacket is connected to the lifting cord by means of suitable cords 18 or other suitable devices and it will be understood that when the jacket has been secured on the body of the patient, the patient may then be readily lifted to or from a bed by operating the winch and the swinging arm.
lVhile I have herein shown and described a preferred form of my invention, I would have it understood that changes may be made in the form, proportion and construction of the several parts without departing from the spirit of my invention and Within the scope of the appended claim.
An invalid lift of the class described comprising a frame having standards, cross bars connecting the upper ends of the standards, a curved track suspended from certain of said cross bars, a swinging arm pivotally connected to one of the standards, a wheel mounted on the free end of the swinging arm and operating on the curved track, pulleys carried by the swinging arm, a lifting cord engaging the pulleys, and a winch for said cord and secured to the said standard to which the pivoted arm is connected.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FRANK I. BELLES.
