ICE-PICK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 22, 1913.
Application filed September 11, 1912. Serial No. 719,741.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, WILLIAM H. S'rrNoH- COMB and HARRY WALLIS, both citizens of the United States, residing at Durand, in the county of Shiawassee and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ice-Picks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to ice picks having a plurality of knives or teeth and has for its objects to provide a tool of this character, which shall be of simple construction, cheap to manufacture and of such construction that repairing, replacing and sharpening of the knives or teeth may be performed with a minimum of expense and trouble; also to provide a tool of this character which may be taken apart expeditiously and packed in small compass for purposes of transportation, all of which objects, among others, are accomplished by the construction and combination of parts hereinafter more particularly set forth and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this application and in which like characters designate like parts throughout: Figure 1 represents a view in perspective of a tool embodying our invention; Fig. 2, a view in side elevation of the same; Fig. 3, a bottom plan .view of the head or plate, showing the countersinks in the lower face of the four corners of the head around the respective four corner perforations said countersinks receiving the square shoulders of the four corner lmives or teeth; Fig. 4, a top plan view of the head or plate showing the countersink around the central perforation or bore to receive the lower end of the handle; Fig. 5 is a cross sectional view through the handle and plate, showing the central tooth, its nut and shank in elevation; Fig. 6, a detail plan view of one of the four corner knives and its shank; Fig. 7, a cross sectional view on the line 7-7 of Fig. 6; Fig. 8, a similar view on the line 8-8 of Fig. 6, this figure being taken much nearer the point of the knife to show the taper thereof; and Fig. 9, a detail view of the central tooth or knife, its nut applied thereon and its shank integral with said tooth, the screw-threaded part and the rounded part appearing clearly in this figure.
Referring now in detail to the drawings 1 designates the handle, having a bifurcated lower end and 2 the head composed of a thick piece of plate metal, in the form of a square having its corners rounded. Of course it is not absolutely necessary that plate metal be used for this head, any other suitable material will answer, though plate metal is preferred. This plate is provided with five perforations or bores 3, one in each corner and one in the middle and is provided with square countersinks 4 in its lower face around each corner bore or perforation 3 and in its top face with recesses 11 on opposite sides respectively of the central bore or perforation 3.
Four teeth or knives 5, square in cross section and tapering toward their points, are provided, one for each corner of said plate 2. Each of teeth or knives 5 is provided with square shoulders 6, corresponding in size and shape to the size and shape of said countersinks l, in order to provide a tight fit of the shoulders therein and guard against all possible twisting or turning of said knives 5. Each of said knives or teeth 5 is further provided with a rounded shank 7 corresponding in diameter to the diameter of said bores or perforations 3 and has its upper part externally screw threaded to receive a nut 8, each shank 7 being of a length corresponding to the combined thickness of plate or head 2 and one of the nuts 8. Thus these shanks 7 of the teeth 5 pass through the corner perforations 3 of the plate 2 and the nuts are then turned on the upper ends of the respective shanks 7, drawing the respective shoulders 6 snugly and firmly into the respective countersinks 4: and firmly holding the teeth or knives 5 in position against turning or twisting or coming loose in any way other than the removal of the nuts.
A central knife or tooth 9 shorter than the knives or teeth 5, but similar in shape, though smaller in cross section, is provided for the central bore 3. This knife is composed of a knife portion proper or blade, next above this a screw threaded portion, next above this a rounded part corresponding in diameter to the diameter of the cen tral bore 3 and next above this an integral flattened part or shank 10 having shoulders 13 which correspond in size and shape to the recesses 11 respectively and are adapted to fit snugly and tightly therein.
In assembling the shank 10 is fitted into the bifurcated end of handle 1 and held firmly therein by bolts 12 which pass through said handle and said shank, or by any other convenient means. The central knife or tooth 10 is then passed from the top through the central hole 3 of said head or plate 2 and the nut 14 is next passed over the point of the knife proper and up said knife until it engages the screwthreaded portion of the latter, when it is turned tightly thereon, drawing the shoulders 13 firmly and snugly into the respective recesses 11 and the end of the handle firmly against the upper face of said head 2, thus bracing the tool against strain and stress. The corner knives 5 are then secured in position as above described.
Having thus described our invention,-
what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
An ice pick comprising a handle and a plate provided with a perforation and having a recess in its top communicating with Oopieaot this patent may be obtained for said perforation, in combination with a knife adapted to pass through saidperforation and having an integral shank provided with a shoulder, means for securing said shank in said handle, the adjacent end of said handle being formed to engage said plate, and means operating on said knife and the under face of said plate to draw said shoulder firmly into said recess and the end of said handle tightly against the top of said plate.
In testimony whereof, we have signed our names to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
