Description

Lettersl Patent No. 105,978, 'dated August 2, 1870, l'
IMPROVEMENT, IN EYBLETS FOR FASTENING- BUTTONS.
, m K l ,I The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making u! the same.
My invention fully overcomes these diculties by covering the head, or cap, or end a, of the eyelet or rivet b -with linen or other suitable material, which will then present a surface of the same texture and color as that of the garment to which it is attached, fully doingawayyrith all the objections afore named.
yIn order to thus cover 'the head or end of' my eyel let or rivet, by means of a suitable punch I cnt out a l small disk of linen, c, place thereon` the cap 0r disk d,
of zinc or other'material/whim is of less diameter than the linen disk c, so that the edges of the linen will extend around it.
The edges of the cap or disk l .are then turned up in a suitable press, bringing the edges of the linen disk c around said turned-up edges, and at the same time the lower end ofthe eyelet or rivet b (which had' previously been placed on the cap or disk d) is spread or flared out under the turned-np edges of the disk or cap d, tightly forcing or jamming the edges of the button with my invention thereon; i l linen disk o between said'turned-up edgesV and the Figure'2,'asection of same; v spread of the eyelet or rivet i1, and thus `tightly Figure 3, a plan or' top view of same; `and a stretching the linen over the cap, and seeming it in Figure 4, adetailed view cf'same. said position. Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding I do not wish to confine myself to thuseovering parts in the'seveial figures. l' the cap of an eyelelt with linen alone, but it may be It is well known that heretofore buttons have been covered with any suitable material.-- attached to clothing, otc., by means of eyelets, rivets, Having thus described my invention, i l Sto., the eyelct or rivet passing` through the fabric of What I claim as new, au desire'to secure by Letthe 'garment by means of a hole previously made ters Patent, istherein, the inner end ol' said eyelet being formed The combination of abutton with an eyelet or rivet,
To all whom "it may concern: v'
Be it known that I, SAMUEL M. PORTER, of the city, county, and'State of New York,y have invented anew and^useful Improvement in Eyelets,r&c.; and I do hereby declare that `the lfollowing is a full and exact description thereof, reference being hadto the' accmpanying drawing, and to the letters of reference markedthereon, making a part ci' this specilication.
The'natureof this invention is an improvement in eyelets, rivets, dto., such as are` used to attach buttons, &e., to clothing; and
It consists in covering the base or cap of the cyelet y* or rivet with linen or' other suitable material, so that i? he metallic surface will not hc exposed and soil the clothingand at the same tiine present a surface of uniform'color and texture with the garment to which it' is attached.
In the accompanying drawing- Figurel represents a side view of an eyeletand' with u. head, and the other end being spreadinto the the b ase, head, or cap of` said eyclet or rivet bein button, and in this way firmly securing the button t0 covered with linenor other` textile fabric, substantially 'the garment. y as and for the purposes described.
But in practice it Ais found that 'the head of the eye SAMUEL M. PORTER.' leton rivet a, or the part that contines the inner side g l 0f the fabric, by reason of its metallic surface, presents Witnesses:
an funiinished and untasty appearance; besides, the H. L. WATTENBEG, metallic surface wears off byabrasou, and soils the G. M. PLYMPTON.
