DEVICE TO HOLD JOINTS TOGETHER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed June 1, 1912.
Patented Apr. 22,1913.
Serial No. 701,087.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOSEPH V. BYERs, citizen of the United States, residing at Lebanon, in the county of Smith and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices to Hold Joints Together, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to a stove pipe connector, and has for its object the production of an eflicient means whereby the sections of a stove pipe are prevented from coming apart.
Another object of this invention is the production of a simple clamping plate formed from a blank.
With these and other objects in view, this invention consists in certain novel combinations, constructions, and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described.
In the accompanying drawings :Figure 1 is a perspective view of the sections of a stove pipe connected by means of a clamping band and improved clamping plate. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section taken through the connecting means. Fig. 3 is a transverse sec tion taken through the connecting means. Fig. t is a perspective view of the improved clamping plate, which may be formed from a blank.
Referring to the accompanying drawings by numerals l designates a primary section and 2 an auxiliary section, the primary section fitting within the auxiliary section. The primary section 1 is provided near its lower end with a head 3. The auxiliary section 2 is also provided with a similar bead 4. It will be seen that when the primary section 1 is telescoped within the auxiliary section 2 the outer portion 5 of the auxiliary section rests against the bead 3 and in this manner limits the telescoping of the two sections. A clamping band 6 provided with beads 7 and 8 is placed upon the two afore-mentioned sections. Clamping plates 9 each of which is provided with an enlarged body portion 10 and extending ends 11 are fastened by any suitable means upon the clamping band 6. Each extending end of the clamping plate 9 is provided with the groove 12 so arranged as to engage the beads 7 and 8 of the clamping band 6 as shown in Fig. 1.
The extending ends 11 of the clamping plate 9 are also provided with ears 13, each of said ears being provided with an aperture 1 1 through which pass-es the connecting bolt 15, said bolt being adapted to draw the two free ends of the clamping band together.
By referring to Fig. I, it will be seen that the clamping plate is provided with several apertures 16 through which the fastening means, whereby the clamping band and clamping plate are held in engagement, pass. The body 10 of the clamping plate 9 fits in between the bead portions 7 and 8 of the clamping band 6 and constitutes a brace for reinforcing the. bead portions as said head portions engage the bead portions 3 and 4 of the sections of the pipe.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new, is
1. In a stove pipe connector of the class described, the combination of a primary section and an auxiliary section, said primary section fitting in said auxiliary section, said primary and auxiliary sections being provided near their outer ends with circumferential heads, a clamping band mounted upon said primary and auxiliary sections, said clamping band being provided with a plurality of circumferential grooves, said grooves being adapted to engage the beads formed upon the outer end of said primary and auxiliary sections, clamping plates mounted upon said clamping band, said clamping plates being provided with extending ends, said extending ends each provided with a groove adapted to engage a circumferential bead formed upon the clamping band, ears formed upon the extending end of said clamping plate, and means passing through said ears adapted to draw the free ends of the clamping band together.
2. In a stove pipe connector of the class described, the combination of a primary section and an auxiliary section, said primary section fitting within said auxiliary section, the outer ends of said primary and auxiliary sections being provided with circumferential beads, a clamping band mounted upon said primary and auxiliary sections, said clamping band provided with a plurality of circumferential grooves adapted to engage the beads formed upon the primary and auxiliary sections, clamping plates attached to the free ends of said clamping In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my band, said clamping plates being provided signature in presence of two witnesses.
with an enlarged body portion adapted to fit JOSEPH V BYERS snugly between the grooves formed upon said clamping band and acting as centering Witnesses:

the clamping plates upon the clamping band.
