Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 22, 1913.
Application filed June 17, 1912. Serial No. 704,101.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IVILLIAM A. ZUM- WALT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Farmington, in the county of San Joaquin, State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Framing-Templets; and I do declare the following to be a clear, full, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this application.
This invention relates to improvements in carpenters tools and is particularly designed for use for measuring off the angles at which the rafters, jack rafters and similar parts of a building are to be cut, the object of the invent-ion being to produce such a tool for this purpose as will do away with the necessity of using a square.
A further object of the invention is to produce a simple and inexpensive device and yet one which will be exceedingly effective for the purposes for which it is designed.
These objects, I accomplish by means of such structure and relative arrangement of parts as will fully appear by a perusal of the following specification and claim.
In the drawings similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views.
Figure 1 is a top plan view of the improved framing templet. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same.
Referring now more particularly to the characters of reference on the drawings, I first provide a flat member 1 provided with two projecting lugs or lips 3 and 4, along one side'of the member 1 which-lips are adapted to project against the side of the timber to adjust the member 1 with respect thereto. The member 1 is provided with inclined sides a and b and inclined slots c and d.
In practice, by placing the members 3 and 4: against the side of the rafter the side a will give the angle of the level cut for the rafter, while the side b will give the plumb cut for the rafter and the slot 0 will give the angle of the side cut for the jack rafter and the slot d will give the angle of the side out for the hip rafter. The member 1 is provided with a handle 1 to enable it to be used easily and conveniently. The member 4 is of such a length as to present its square edge 4: along the side of the beam in order to permit the same to be marked off squarely for the purpose of making a guide for a vertical cut at that point.
WVhile I have shown in the drawings the inclined sides as at certain angles to the side having lugs suited to a pitch of 35, still in practice these may be made of any other angle necessary for a different pitch of the roof rafters or other lumber to be cut. The sides of the said members 1 and 2 may also be used to measure different lengths of timber.
From the foregoing description it will be readily seen that Ihave produced such a device as substantially fulfils the object of the invention as set forth herein.
While this specification sets forth in detail the present and preferred construction of the device, still in practice such deviations from such detail may be resorted to as do not form'a departure from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and useful and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A framing templet as described comprising a flat member, depending lugs on one side of said flat member, a handle member on said flat member, said flat member having two inclined sides adjacent the side on which said lugs are disposed, one of such inclined sides inclining at the proper angle to adapt it for use in fixing the angle of the level out for a rafter, the other of such inclined sides inclining at the proper angle to adapt it for use in'fixing. the angle for the plumb cut for a rafter, said flat member being provided with two slots inclined to the side having the lugs, one of such slots being disposed at such an angle With respect to said side as to In testimony whereof I affix my signature adapt it ffor use in fizing the angle of the in presence of two witnesses.
side out or a jack ra ter and the other of such slots being disposed at such an angle WILLIAM ZUMWALT' with respect 'to said side as to adapt it for Witnesses:
use in fixing the angle of the side cut for a- 1 JOSHUA B. VEBSTER,
hip rafter. CLARENCE M. SMITH.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents, Washington, D. C.
