Description

E; W.HARTMAN.
HEAD COLLAR FOR FILES.
APPLICATION FILED JAN. 31, 1912.
Patented Apr. 22, 1913.
r 1 4 In W I'IESSE'E UNITED 1 STATES PATENT (DFFIGE;
EMANUEL W. HARTMAN,OF OAKLAND, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNORI. TO CALIFORNIA BUILDING :MATERIAL COMPANY, OF S RATION OF CALIFORNIA;
ANIRANGISCO, CALIFORNIA, A GORPO HEAD-COLLAR FOR FILES. 1
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I,EMANUEI1 W. HlART- MAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oakland, inthe countyof lAlameda and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Head-Collars for Piles, of which the followingis a specification.
My invention relates to the class of collars 1 or rings for the heads or upper ends of piles.
The objects of the invention are to steady and guide the head of thepile whilebeing driven, and also= toprotect :it from injury under the blows of the hammer.
Though my invention is 1 applicable to piles of various materials: and constructions,
particularly in its steadying and H guiding,
function, it is especially useful for and is intended for application to. concrete :piles, in that it affords the necessary protection against injury from 1 blows.
My inventiomconsistsin the novel Icollar,
which I shall now. fully describe by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which I Figure l is a plan, showing the application of the collar. Fig. 2 is a verticalvsection of the same. Fig. 3 is a bottom view of the collar.
1, in Fig. 2, is the head iof a pile. This pile may be of any material or construction.
In the best use of myinventionzthe pile is of concrete, the head being polygonal i and Specification :of Letters Patent.
Application flled January 31, 1912. Serial No. 674,444.
Patented Ap1u22, 19213.
the top ;of the pile, and through a hammer plate 6;receives the blows of the hammer. The collar :2 is formed with side grooves 7 I which fit and slide u on the leads or guides 8 of the pile driver rame.
It will now be seen that the collar 2, by fit- I tingboth the pile head and the guides 8 of: the pile driver frame, serves to steady and:
guide the pile, while being driven. The
principal. function, however,of the collar :is to protect the head of the pile from injury resulting; from the hammer blows, which function it performs by taking upon itself: the circumferential tensiondue tothe blows. a
By rojecting above the pile head, the collar: orms a socket to receive and holdthe;
striking block, which it also protectsby its circumferential tension.
Having gthllS described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is-- In a ideviceof the character described, a: head 00111117100111 rising a solid portion having an iopening t erethrough, the lower portion, of which is tapered to fit uponi and, closely embrace the upper end of a correspondiiogly shaped pile, the upperportion of which is provided with a verticallydisposed; wall to provide a socket: in the upper por-" tion of the head collar whenzthe same is in: positionupon; apile, and astrikin iblocki positioned within and completely fillm the socket in saidihead collar, said. striking, lockf extending above the upper surface of the I head collar and the lower portion thereof be ing positioned to directly engagethe top of the pile.
In testimonywhereof I have signed. my
name to this specification in thepresence of two subscrlbmg witnesses.
EMANUEL W. HARTMAN.
'Witnesses WM.;F. Boom, D. BJRIOHARDS.
