Description

Kif/ffm;
WA HINGTON DvC4 gaat apta.
WILLIAM- II. HOLLAND, or: BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS. I
. Letters Patent No. 105,943, dated/iugnst 2, 1870.`
w i IMPROVEMENT IN PAImLE-W'armas` The cheduflereferred to in these Letters Patent and making part pf the same I,.WILLIAM H. HOLLAND, of Boston, iu the county of Suiolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain Improvements inSteamboat Paddle-Wheels` of which the following is a specication.
The drawing .represents a section of my improved wheel `in perspective.
`The object of my invention is to produce a wheel that shallovercome t-hepjar` incident to side-wheel steamboats, and a wheel that can be cheaplymad'e and easily attached. I l
The nature of my invention consists in the arrangementof floats, as will hereinafter more fully' appear.
The frame-work of thewheel is composed ot' Vrims or rings A and arms A1 A2 A, &c., `to which are attached the sets of oats B `B and DAD. Said oats extend half way across thewheel, one of the Boats, B,
running from the upper sides of the arms Al tothe opposite sides of the arms A, and thelother from the upper sides of the` arms A2 to thcfopposite sides of arms Ai', while theposition of oats DD is the re-v verse, Vthat is,'passing from the` upper sides of arms I A to the 'opposite sides of arms'A, and from the uppersides of arms A2 to the opposite sides of arms A', each set of float-sibeing placed in parallel planes in- I clini'ngoutward in opposite directions `from the axis ofthe wheel, the 'floats `B inclining from a to b and lfrom e` to d, as shown, and the rloats D inclining4 in t the opposite direction, and yalternatingr in position, as abovestated. f p I Instead of having the floats extend half way across, they may belong planks, like E E, but preserving the same relative positions, that is, dropping from a' to b.'
The advantage of the construction shown is the simplicityof attaching the floats vto oldlwheels,.am l.
the relief' from jar, as the positions of' the'oats tend to secure a constant graduated pressure against the Water by the oat beginning to strike at one end first and gradually taking hold, while the alternating inclinations of the sets of floats from the axle tend to equalize theresistance across the face' of the'wheel while in contact with the water, and enable it to work backward aswell as forward. l Having thus fully described my invention,
WllatI claim as new, and desire to secure by Let- `ters Patent, is- A v v The oatsB B and D D, arranged with reference to each other and to the axis of' the wheel, substantially as described.
In testimonywhereof' I have signed 'my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
l WM. H. HOLLAND.
