EQUALIZING ROLL-POLISHING DEVICE.

Lancaster, in the county of Lancaster and' State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to an equalizing roll-polishing device for cleaning and polishing the surface of rolls, and is particularly adapted for use in connection with the rolls of a mill for rolling sheet metal, or
similar use where a scale is deposited upon the rolls, rendering them uneven and changing their adjustment,
The object of the invention is to provide a device of this class that may be suitably mounted in proper relation to the rolls and in an adjustablemanner to have the proper pressure upon the surface of the roll.
Another object of the inventionis to provide a device of this kind that shall have an even pressure of its entire surface upon the roll and be self-eolualizing.`
Still another object being to provide a device simple of construction, containing few parts, and having the wearing parts capable of removal, and the wearing surface so constructed as to be self-cleaning.
With these and other objectsin view, my invention consists in certain construction and combinationzof parts as will hereinafter y be fully described and claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings which form a part of this application, and in which like figures of reference refer to corresponding parts in all of the views; but it is fully understood that While I have here described my invention as shown, that I do not confine myself to the exact design, as slight changes maybe made in the constructionf the several parts withand arrangement of the spirit of the invenout departing from tion.
In the drawings :-Figure 1, is a top plan view of the device. Fig. 2, is a similar vided adjustable bearings view, with the polishing surface removed. Fig. 3, is a longitudinal vertical .sectional view, taken on the line X--X of Fig.` 1. Fig. 4,1 is a vertical cross sectional view, taken onthe line Y-Y of Fig. 1. Fig. 5, is a side elevation of aportion of a rolling machinc,showing the device applied thereto.
Referring to the drawings, the device comprises a casing or body member 1, rectangular and box-shaped in form and prowith the sides 2, ends 3, and trunnions or other mounting means 4. Within said casing 1, and to the bot-tom thereof are secured a series of springs 5, of semi-elliptic or `other forms which are arranged in the manner shown, with their ends extending upward. Resting upon the ends of said springs 5, are a series of backing blocks 6, which are connected together by the longitudinal flexible rods 7, extending throueli the holes 8, in said blocks 6; said bloc s being confined by the sides and ends 2, and 3, but having a fee vertical movement upon the springs 5. The outer surface of said block 6, is curved transversely ofthe device to conform to the curve of the roll, and is formed with diagonal ribs 14, spaced apart and forming grooves 9, between their sides. Upon this surface is secured, by the rivets 10, or other suitable means, a polishing material 11, such as asbestos fiber combined with a reinforcing .material to provide a fire-proof material coveringthe ribs 14, and grooves 9.
The device is mounted as shown in Fig. 5, (or in any other suitable manner) in the 12, with the polishing surface 11, in contact with the surface of the roll- 13, and under pressure of the springs 5. As the rolls 13, revolve, the dirt or scale from their surface is scraped otf, enters the grooves and drops from the openends of the same, thus rendering the device `selfcleaning.
