SAFETY APPARATUS ron OIL-TANKS.
To all whom '25 may concern Be it known that I, JESSE I1. MILI".1JR,a` citizen of the United States, residing at Lewis', in the parish of Caddo and State of Louisiana, haveinvented new and useful Improvements in Safety Apparatus for Oil- Tanks, of which the following is a specification.
The invention An object of the invention 4is to .provide an apparatus forpreventin explosions of oil tanks or the burning of t e oil contained in the tanks. 1
embodies, among other fea` tures, a device embodying a valve normally mounted in open position' `of an oil tank, said valve having connec- V tion with a fusiblemember which, when -paratus applied to the vent 30 I disclose fused, will release the valve and permit-the same to\gravitate into closed position to close the vent pipe. l
In the further disclosure of the invention reference is `to be'had to the accompanying drawings constituting a part of this specification, 1n which similar characters of refer ence denote corresponding parts .in al1 the' views, and in which: a
Fi re 1 is a fragmentary vertical sectiona view of an oil tank, showing -my a pipe thereof, t e valvebeing shown in normal position; Fig.
2 1s a horizontal 'sectional view taken on the .line 2-2 in Fig. 1, the valve being-shown 1n closed position and in section; and Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional View taken on the line 3-3 in Fig. 1.j
' Referring more particularly to the views, a tank 10 having a vent pipe 11 mounted to extend upwardly from the top of the tank, a suitable inlet pipe 12- being connected with the tank l0 for the purpose of supplying oil thereto. Mounted to swing in the vent pipe 11 is a valve 13, normally arranged in a vertical position and preferably weighted on theunder outerv end there- .of so that the valve, when released, will gravitate intoclosed position, a lu 14 being projected from the innerface o the vent pipe 1l and' adapted to forma seat for vthe ree end of the valve 13 to'support the same in closed position.
Uprights 1 5 are secured to the upper end of the vent pipell, one of the said uprights terminating in an eye 16 having one end of a fusible member 17 secured thereto, a chain or cord 18 being connectedto the other end 0f the fusible member and adaptedto V,pass

oft-he other. upri ht l5, the said chain. being ada ted to pass trough a restricted openin 20 ormed 1n a wall having connection valve' .13 to normally retainithe valve I -i-n of the vent pipe 1 1 an open; position.
reticulated burner plate 2l is secured in e 11 above the valve-13 and' it ily seen that if, thrf` agh a bolt of lightning o r other means, the j ases which exhaust through the vent pipe l, from the oil tank 10, are ignited the same will burn above the reticulated burner plate 21 and it will be further seen that the heat produced by the combustion of the mentioned gasesv my invention, I
from a wall ofthe vent pipe and forming e said valve, a
mountedin the said a seat for the free end o reticulated burner plate vent pipe over thesait. valve, uprights extended upwardlyfrom the said vent pipe, a fusible' member -secured to u prights, a pulley journaled on the other upjournaled onthe upper end" with the free end of the eol one of the said-l right, and a chain connected to' the said valve and extending over th'e said pulley to connect with the said fusible member to normally retain the said valve in open posi- 2. Ina device ofthe class described, the combination witha vent pipe for connection with a tank, of, a valvegravitationally mounted therein, uprights -secured tothe said vent pipe,
other upright, and a chain connected to the said fusible member-and passing over the said 4pulley to connect lwith' the -said valve to normally retain the same in open posiv tion in the said vent pipe.
3. 'In a deviceo'f combination with a with a tank,
the class described, the
of a valve gravitationally a fusible member secured to"l one ofthe said uprights, a'pulley on the vent pipe for connection usb'eA-ajnomber yand passing over the said jfznlllfey toll-connect mth the 'said 'valve #o nol'- Wltnesses:
