UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE LIIOTE, OF NEIV ORLEANS, LOUISIANA.
CHIMNEY-COVER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 415,916, dated November 26, 1889.
Application filed May 7, 1889. Serial No. 309,932. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Beit known that I, GEORGE LHOTE, of New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented a new and Improved Ohimney-0over, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved cover for chimneys, serving to extinguish fires which so frequently arise in chimneys from burning light fuel such as waste wood, shavings, &c.in the furnace, oven, &c., connected with the chimney.
The invention consists of a cover adapted to close the upper end of a chimney and hinged on a frame adapted to slide on the upper end of a chimney, and of cables or ropes connected with the said cover to open and close the same.
The invention also consists in certain parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter, and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a side elevation of the improvement as applied and showing the cover open. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the same with parts in sect-ion. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 4 is a sectional side elevation of the improvement, showing the cover closed; and Fig. 5 is a plan view of a modified form of frame.
On the extreme upper end of the chimney A is secured a rectangular frame B, and a short distance below this frame is held a second rectangular frame O, connected with the frame B by the stays D, D, D and D, arranged in the corners of the said frame. The frames I3 and C may also be made in sections, as shown in Fig. 5. The sections are bent to conform to the shape of the chimney A, and are fastened together by bolts, as shown. On the stays D and D is held to slide vertically a frame E, provided with the sleeves E and E through which pass loosely said stays D and D, respectively, the sleeves E and E being connected with each other by the three rods E E and On the upper rod E is hinged the cover F, preferably made of sheet metal and adapted to fit on the top frame B on the top of the chimney A, as is plainly shown in Fig.
l. On the outer end of the cover F is secured a sidewise-extending rod (.1r,'to which is fasten ed one end of a rope II, passing over a pulley I, mounted to rotate in suitable bearings in the frame 13. The rope II extends down on the outside of the chimney A to the ground.
On the top of the cover F are secured the ends of a V- shaped rod K, projecting over the rear end of the cover and forming a loop K. (Plainly shown in Fig. 2.) In this loop is secured one end of a rope L, extending on the outside of the chimney to the ground. A third rope N has one end fastened to the transverse bar E of the frame E, and is passed over a pulley 0, held to rotate in suitable bearings secured to the frame B, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The rope N extends to the ground, and is adapted to be secured to a cleat or other device near the ground.
Inside of the chimney A, near its top, is placed a wire screen P, which serves to arrest any sparks passing up the chimney.
The operation is as follows: The chimneycover in its natural position has its frame E resting on the lower ends of the stays D and D near the frame 0, as is plainly shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2. The cover F is then in a vertical position, and is prevented from swinging outward by the projecting end of the rod K bearing upon the said rod E The upper end of the chimney is now entirely open, so that the smoke can freely escape in the usual manner, but sparks are prevented from passing outward by the wire screen P.
When a fire arises in the chimney A, it can be quickly extinguished by myimproved device in the following manner: As soon as it .is discovered that a fire is raging in the chimney the operator pulls on the rope N, so that the frame E slides upward on the stays D and D until it reaches the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The operator then pulls on the rope H, so as to exert a pressure against the cover F in the direction of the arrow a, whereby the cover swings downward onto the open frame B and onto the top of the chimney A, The fire inside of the chimney, hav ing no outlet, is smothered. The operator fastens the lower end of the rope N to a cleat, so as to hold the frame E in position. When the fire is extinguished, the operator loosens the rope N and then pulls on the rope L, so
as to swing the cover F backward into its former position, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, after which the operator exerts a further downward pull, so that the frame E, with the cover F, slides downward on the stays D and D into its original, position. The chimney A is then again uncovered at the top and is used in the ordinary way. It is understood that by this simple device a dangerous fire in a chimney can be easily extinguished.-
It will be seen that this device is princi-' pally intended for saw-mills, sash-factories, and other wood-working factories in which the waste wood and shavings are generally used for fuel in the furnace or in ovens.
The device may also be used in sugar-refineries, cotton-factories, and all factories burning any light and inflammable material.
Having thus described my invention, whatI claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A chimney-cover con'iprising' a cover adapted to close the upper end of a chimney,
a frame adapted to slide on the side of the chimney near its upper end, and ropes or cables connected with the said cover and frame to open and close the cover, substantially as shown and described.
2. A chimney-cover comprising a fixed frame held on the upper end of a chimney, a movable frame held to slide on the said fixed frame on the outside of the chimney, and a cover pivoted on the said movable frame, substantially as shown and described.
A chimney-cover comprising a fixed frame held 011 the upper end of a chimney, a movable frame held to slide on the said fixed frame on the outside of the chimney, a cover pivoted on the said movable frame, and ropes or cables connected with the said cover and the said movable frame to operate the same, substantially as shown and described.
