Specification of Letters Patent.
Application led October 11, 1912. Serial No. 725,258.
To all fwLOmc' may concern Be it known that I, GRANVILLE GAITHER, a. citizen of'ftheUnited States, residing at Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts,4 have invented new. and useful Im rovements in Combination- Faucetsof which the following is a specification. y
This invention relates to a faucet adapted to be attachedito a barrel-containing liquid of some sort, or some such dispensing 'receptacle; theprimary object thereofy being to provide means for locking thehand-controlled valve plug forming a part thereof when the same is in its closed position and the iow of liquid is-cut off.'
A further obj ectis the provision of a combination lock peculiarly adapted to lock1 the valve plu .inclosed position, so that unauthorize persons cannot release the lock ing-means.
A still closedl position and adapted to return the same to closed'p'ositionupon release ofthe handle by which the valve plug may be turned 'into opened position, thus preventing danger of excessive` flow of liquid, due to inattention on the part of the one dispensing the same.
' Another object of 'the invention is to provide means by which Athe valve plug may be' lockedfin opened position when it is desired to let the flow of-liquid continue for some time, attention thereto being renderedun-l necessary.
'With thesev and other objects in-v-iew, the
` invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the. accompanying drawings z--Figure 1 is a side elevation of the deyice;-Fig. 2 is a front elevation thereof; Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view, taken through th'e device, and showing the valve plug in closed position with the locking members in open releasing positiong. Fig. 4 is a-fragmentaryi perspective View, showing the valve plug in closed jvposition andthe lockingmembers in locking positin; Fig..5 is a longitudinal, vertical sectional View through a portion of the device, showingthe valve plug in open position and the means for locking the plug in open position operative; Fig. 6 is a transverse sectional View, taken on the line 6-6 further-.object is to provide. means for normally maintaining the'valve plug in view'of one of the locking-members.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the main body of the faucet which is constructed of any suitable material and Patented Apr. 1-5, 1913.
of= Fig.l 3; and Fig. 7 is a detail perspective which is provided with a longitudinal pas- 1 sageway 2 therein extending inwardlyl fromits inner attaching endfB and communicating with avertically-disposed plug opening 4 also provided. in the saidbody. A cylindrical lockcasing 5 is formed upon the body 1 around the upperend of the valve plug opening 4; the upper end of said casing being -exteriorly screwthreaded for the reception of an internally threaded' cap 6,
which is adapted to close the upper end-0f the casing and is provided centrally with a bearing opening 7 for the reception ofthe.
upper reduced end 8 of. the valve. plug 9 which extends downwardly through the casing-5 into the valvefopening- 4^ in the body of the device. The lower portion of the Valve plug 9 is provided with a longitudinaldischarge opening 10 having-a lateral exf tension ll'adapted to aline with the passagewayl 2v when the valve lug is turnedfinto open position by grasplng the :detachable handle 12 secured tothe upper end of 1 the valve plug.
providedwithl a pair ofv vertically spaced, il
cylindrical openings 13 and'14 forthe recept1on of a pair of locking members 15 and 16,
respectively, Whose inner ends are provided with'flanged heads 17 havinga lateral `slot 18'. provided therein and extending from one edge thereof to the center of the head. AThe outerends. of said slots are flared, 4as-at 19,l
to provide mouths for the reception of a pair of vertically. spaced studs or pins 20 and 21 secured'to the Valve plug 9 on the same `side as the lateral extension 11 of the discharge opening 10. A fiat coiled spring 22 surrounds the body portion of the valve plug 9 adjacent the upper endof the'lock casing ioo and has one end secured to said plug and the from the inner wall of the lock casing and is adapted to be engaged by the pin 20 when the valve plug is in open position, so as to limit the movement thereof.
A collar 24 provided with an annular l 85 Thefrontewall'ofthe valve casing 5y is flange 25 is secured to the reduced end 8 of the valve plug immediately above the cap 6 and vis provltled in the side adjacent the pins 2O and' 21 with al vertically disposed opening 26 for the reception of a securing pin 27, this opening 26 being longitudinally slotted, as at 28, for the reception of a laterally extending lug 2 9 formed on the said pin 27.. The upperI end of the pin 27 is enlarged to provide a knurled head 30having a peripheral slot 31 provided in its lower portion for the reception of the bifurcated ends 32 of an angular spring member 33 whose outer end is adapted to be detachably secured, as at 34, to the adjacent edge of the flange 25. The spring member 33 is adapted to normally maintain the pin 27 in its uppermost inoperative position with the lug 29 withinfthe slot 28, t-he lower end of the pin being thus held above the upper surface of the cap 6, When, however, it is desired to lock the valve plug in open position, the knurled head 30 of the pin 27 is depressed, so that the lower end of the pin will become engaged with a recess 35 in said cap 6 on the opposite-side .from the locking members,
.and the pin is then rotated so that lthe lug 29 will become engaged beneath the flange 25 and out of alinement with the slot 28, thus preventing the pin from being drawn into inoperative position, due to the action of the spring 33. In order to release the plug when in closed position, the pin 27 is rotated so as to bring the lug 29 in alinement with the slo-tl 28, when the spring 33 will draw the same into inoperative position andout of engagement with the recess 35. The limiting' lug 23 provided within the lock casing serves to limit the motion of the valve plug so that, when the plug is turned into opened position and is checked so that further,` mo-tion in'that direction is prevented, the recess 35 in the cap 6 will be in direct alinement with the securing pin 27, thus facilitating the operation of securing the plug in this position.
The outer ends. of the locking members l5 and 16 are provided with circular heads 36 and 37, respectively, whose peripheral edges are. knurled to facilitate operation thereof1 and which are provided Wit-h suitable indicia inscribed therein and corresponding t'o a plurality of oircumferentially spaced notches, so' `that a person entitled to open the lock and' thus release the valve plug may rotate the locking members until the proper notches come into alinement, which in this particular case happens to be the notches identified by the numerals 8 and 1 upon the heads 36 and 37, respectively. Vhenever the locking members are brought into this particular position, the slots 18 provided in the innermostheads 17 are in the proper horizontal position necessary to release the pins 20 and 21. lVhen it is desired to lock the pins 20 and 21 in this position, the locking members are rotated so as to throw the slots 18 into such angular positions that it is absolutely impossible for the valve plug to be rotated, the said pins being disposed in this position in-prolongation of the longitudinal axes of the Alocking members, which arrangement permits rotation of the locking means when the pins are abutting the inner ends of their respective slots. From this description, it will be apparent that considerable dilicult-y would be involved in unlocking the plug without a knowledge of the combination, due to the fact that it requires proper adjustments of both locking members in order to permit release of the plug-carried pins.
Having thus described my invent-ion, what I claim is 1. In a device of the class described, a body having a plug opening therein, a valve plug rotatably mounted in said opening, a
lock casing formed on said body and surrounding a portion of said plug, a pair of locking members rotatably mounted in said casing, heads formed on the inner ends of said members and each provided with a radial slot therein, locking pins provided upon said valve plug and engageable within said slots, said locking members adapted to be rotated to lock the said pins within their respective slots, and means by which said plug may be rotated when unlocked.
2. In a device of the class described, a body having a plug opening therein, a valve plug rotatably mounted in said plug, a plurality of locking pin's provided upon said valve plug, and a plurality of locking members rotatably mounted in the body, each of said members being provided in its inner end with a central opening and a radial slot communicating with said opening for the reception of one of said locking pins.
In testimony whereof I aHiX my signature in presence o two witnesses.
