Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 15,1913.
Application led May 14, 1912. Serial No. 697,260.
` ber 999,990.
The objects of these improvements is to simplify the construction of the lock itself,
the manner of securing the back in place and, to reduce the cost of construction without affecting the durability of the lock.
With these objects in view, the invention consi-sts of the novel features of construction hereinafter fully described, pointed out in y 'the claims, and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which, y
Figure 1 is a face view. Fig. 2 is a vertical section. Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a section on the line 4 4 o Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of one of the rings. Fig. 6 is a detail sectional view 4showing in plane portions of the inner faces of flanges carried by certain rings.
In these drawings, 1 represents a cylindrical casing which at its front is provided with a rabbeted flange 2, within which rotates a dial plate 3, provided with a suitable notch or mark 4 and the outer face of the flange 2 is .provided with a suitable scale 5. The
-dial plate is provided with a milled head 6 by mean-s of which it can be readily turned. A back plate 7 lits over the rear end of the casing 1 and is provided with an annular flange 8, which fits within the casing 1 and bears against the inner face of the flange 2. A shackle 9, the free endV portion of which is provided with oblique grooves 10, upon its opposite sides, is constructed and mounted the same as the shackleshown in my previous patent. This shackle is adapted to be lifted 'vertically a certain distance, then to be swung to oneside. The flange 8 is slot,- ted as shown at 11 to permit said shackle to pass therethrough, the casing l'of course having a suitable slot 1*:L for this purpose. The back plate is locked in position by means of a bayonet slot 12, cut in the flange 8, which vslot engages a pin 13,.carried by the casing 1. Thls greatly simplifies the securing of the back plate in position. over the construction shown in my previous patent.
Placed within the casing are two rings 14 and 14, said rings being recessed or cutaway as shown at 15, and when saidrings are turned in order to bring said recesses into alinement with eachother a circular opening is formed vthrough which the lfree end of the shackle can pass, provided of course the rings are also turned into such position that the opening? so'formed by the recess 15 will register with the openings 1EL When the end of the shackle is passed through said openings, the rings can then be turned so as to cause them to travel in the grooves 10, respectively, thus locking the shackle within thel casing. Each ring is provided with an' interior flange 16, and on said ilanges are formed suitable teeth 17, the depthbf said teeth beingless than that of the flanges. FittingV within the rings and resting upon said'flanges and meshing with the teeth lare toothed wheels 18 and 19, and said wheels carry pins 2O and 21, so situated that upon rotation of said wheels one pin will 'engage the other.
The wheel 18 is secured in place by a suitable screw 22 and the wheel 19 receives a suitable stub shaft -24 formed on the back plate -7 and provided with aI threaded portion upon which is fixed a4 suitable nut 23.
It will be obvious that by turning the dial 3, the wheel 18 willlbe turned 'and this in turnwill rotate the ring 14. When the pin 20 picks up the pin 21, the wheel 1 9 and the ring 14a will be turned, the back plate however remaining stationary as the wheel 19 turns loosely uponthe stub shaft 24 carried by said back plate.
The wheels 18 and 19 are readily detachable from their respective rings, and by detaching them or any one of them and reinserting the same' within the ring with the pin or pins occupying a different relative position with res ect to each other changes vca'n'be made in t e combination.
What I claim is:
f1. A lock of the kind desm'bed mapas-y ing a casing having an interiorllan e adjacent its front, said flange being rab ted, a dial plate turning within said flange and bearing thereupon, a back plate adapted to close the inner end of the casing and having an lannular flange adapted to twithin the casing and to bear against the first menback plate, avtoothed wheel turning loosely upon said stub shaft, a flanged ring mount- Correction in Letters Patent No.1,058,861.
ed upon said toothed wheel and turning therewith-.said ring being notched, a similar Wheel 'x'ed upon the inner face of the dial plate, a flanged and notched ring mounted on and ,tlifmng with said last mentioned wheel, pins carried by said wheels and adapted to engage each other, a shackle adapted to pass through the opening formed by the registeringv of the ring notches, said shackle being grooved upon opposite sides to receive the rings, and means for locking said back plate in posit-ion, said plate being removable when the shackle is Withdrawn rvfrom the lock.
[siiAL] adapted to pass through said openings and means arranged Within said flange 4 locking said shackle against Withdrawal.
