COMBINED SASI-I-HOLDER AND SHADE-SUPPORT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 8, 1913.
Application filed October 18, 1912. Serial No. 726,423.
To all 'whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, JOHN NELSON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Hattiesburg, in the county of Forest and St-ate of Mississippi, have invented `a new and Improved Combined Sash-Holder and Shade-Support, of which the following is a;
full, clear, and exact description. I
My invention has for its design to provide sash-holding means, including elements adapted to be secured to the upper sash of a window and to move therewith, and elements attachable` to parts of the window other than the upper sash, and relatively to.
which the elements carried on the upper sash are movable, whereby the upper sash may be lowered to any desired extent and sustained in the lowered position.
It is a further design of my invention to provide an improved sash-holding means having elements attachable to both sashes and to the window frame in a manner to permit either or both sashes to be opened and sustained in given positions.`
It is also a design of my invention to provide in connection with sash-holding means of the character described, elements adapted to support shade brackets, whereby the shade will be raised or lowered bodily with the raising or lowering of the upper sash.
My invention also has in view, to produce a combined sash holder and shade-supporting means adjustable to suit window frames of varying depth.
The invention will be more particularly explained in the specific description hereinafter to be given.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of ref'- erence indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a window and frame having my invention applied thereto; Fig. 2 is a partial vertical section of the window with my invention applied and on an enlarged scale; and Fig. 3 is a fragmentary perspective view of a bracket forming a part of my invention, and attachable to the upper sash.
In constructing the combined sash holder and shade-supporting means in accordance with the illustrated example, verticallyranging guide bars 10 are provided, the lower ends of which are free and may each be provided with a hand set, as at 10a. Means are provided for securing the guide rods 10 to the upper sash, to move with the latter, as hereinafter depiece laterally ofi"- pscribed. A bracket 11 is secured to the face of each outer stop 12 of the window frame,
through which bracket the rod 10 has sliding movement, a set screw 13 or its equivalent being provided for securing the rod to the bracket 11 in a given position. Similarly each rod 10 has sliding movement through a bracket 14: secured to a face of the lower sash 15, and a set screw 14a on the bracket 14 serves to engage the rod and prevent relative movement between the said rod and the lower sash.
The upper end of each guide rod 10 is secured to a bracket comprising an inner arm 16 and an outer arm 17. Both arms are approximately horizontal, and the inner arm 16 has a vertically disposed base 18, which is attached to the upper sash 19. The arms 17 support and carry a cross bar 20, to the ends of which are attached any approved form of shade brackets 21, for receiving a shade roller (not shown).
In order to adapt the device to windows of varying' depths, the inner and outer arms 16, 17, are adjustably secured together, for which purpose the horizontal member of the bracket 16 is formed with a slot 24, and the horizontal member 23 of the arm 17 is provided with a bolt or pin 25, that extends through the slot 24, a nut 25a on the bolt serving to secure the parts in adjusted p0- sition.
In the example shown, the outer ends of the arms 17, are upturned, as indicated by the numeral 26, and are provided with holes 27 to receive any suit-able fastener for fastening the bar 2O to said arms. Similarly holes 28 are formed in the base or foot 18, for receiving suitable fasteners 18a to attach the brackets to the upper sash 19,
By the described construction it will be seen that the upper and lower sash may be raised or lowered, and by adjusting the set screws 13, 14a, the sashes will be held in the adjusted position. Moreover, since the shade brackets are supported'from the upper sash, the shade will be raised and lowered with the upper sash to afford ventilation.
I have described my invention and a practical means of carrying the same into eli'ect, and I wish to state in conclusion that I do not limit myself strictly to the mechanical details Vherein illustrated, since manifestly the same can be considerably varied without departing from the spirit of the invention.`
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent l. A combined sash holder and shade snpport, comprising a pair of sash brackets having feet at their inner ends to fasten the vsame to the sash ,of a window, said brackets .the lower sash and to the guide rods, and
additional brackets slidably engaging the lguide rods and provided with means to fasten them to window stops and to the guide rods.
2. A window attachment comprising brackets each composed of an inner arm having a base adapted t-o be secured to the upper sash of a window and an outer arm on said inner arm; means for supporting shade brackets from the outer arms, rods secured at their upper ends to said irst mentioned brackets; brackets having means to secure them to a window frame and to adjust-ably ,engage .the rods, and brackets having means tosecure `them to the lower sash and to adjustably 4engage ythe rods.
In testimony whereof I have signed my naine, to `this specication in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN NELSON.
