GUIDE DEVICE FOR IRONING-MACHINES.
Specification of Letters Eatent.
Patented Apr. 8, 1913.
Application filed. May 4, 1912. Serial No. 695,176.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Mosnnr J. TERRY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Houston, in the county of Harris and State of Texas, have invented new and useful Imrovements in Guide Devices for Ironing- Machin'es, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to guide devices, and more particularly to the class of ribbon or cord guides for ironing machines.
The primary ob ect of the invention is the provision of a device of this character in which the ribbons or cords of an ironing machine will be evenly and uniformly guided over the ironing cylinders of the ordinary type or over the flat ironing bed of such type of machine, thus avoiding the twisting or irregular feeding of the said rib-- bons or cords and also obviating the lateral shifting thereof during the working of the machine.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character in which the ribbons or cords of an ironing machine may be readily and easily adjusted in the direction of the longitudinal extent of the rollers or ironing bed of the machine, and which will be smoothly guided over the latter during the operation of said machine.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a guiding device of this character which is simple in construction, readily and easily applied to the machine, capable of adjustment, thoroughly reliable and eflicient in its purpose, and inexpensive in manufacture.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.
In the drawing :-Figure 1 is a top plan View of an ironing machine showing the guides constructed in accordance with the invention mounted thereon. Fig. 2 is an enlarged side elevation of one of the guides. Fig. 3 is a perspective View of one part of the guide device. Fig. 4 is a similar view of the other part.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawing.
Referring to the drawings by numerals, 5 designates a portion of the frame of an ironing machine of any ordinary wellknown construction having the usual rotatable ironing rollers 6 arranged in parallel relation to each other transversely of the bed 7 of the said frame, which are journaled in vertical bearings 8 rising vertically from the bed at opposite sides thereof, the rollers 9 being heated in any ordinary manner for iromng purposes.
Arranged at the front and rear of the series of rollers 6 are guide rods 9, the same being supported in arms 10 integral with andprojecting from the bearings 8 at the front and rear of the machine. Trained over the rods 9 at intervals and also trained over the rollers 6 are guide ribbons, bands or cords 11 as usual, the same being engaged in guide devices presently described.
Each guide device comprises a pair of split clamping rings or collars 12 and 13 respectively, the same being arranged in spaced relation to each other and surround a front guide rod 9, each collar being formed with parallel terminal lugs 14 through one 4 of which is loosely passed a locking screw 15, the same being threaded into the other lug and in this manner the collar may be securely clamped about the rod 9 to sustain the same in adjusted position. Fixed to one of the lugs 14: on the collar 12 is a leaf spring finger 16 the free end of which rests upon the lugs 14 of the collar 13 so as to form a guide way 17 between the collars 12 and 13, the finger 16 and the rod 9 and through this guideway 17 is passed the ribbon, band or cord 11, so as to uniformly guide the same over the rollers 6 and prevent twisting thereof during the travel of the same. It will be noted that the ribbon, band or cord 11 will be guided smoothly over the rollers without possibility of lateral displacement thereof during the travel of the same.
The collars 12 and 18 respectively of each guide device may be adjusted longitudinally on the front rod 9, so as to alter the position of the ribbons, bands or cords 11 for the proper guiding of the same over the rollers during the working of the ironing machine.
It is to be understood of course that the guide device may be used on an ironing machine of the flat bed type without requiring any alteration therein.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it is thought that the construction and operation of the invention will be clearly understood, and therefore, a more extended explanation has been omitted.
What is claimed is 1. A guide device for ironing machines comprising spaced ring-like members adapted to embrace the cross ribbon guide rod of the said ironing machine for receiving ribbons therebetween, and a spring finger carried by one member and contacting With the other member for preventing the jumping of the ribbon from between the said members when engaged in the guide device.
2. A device of the class described oom- Oopies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by
prising a guide device adapted to be mounted on the cross rod of an ironmg machine and having a guide-way for receiving a ribbon passing over such rod, and means for MOSLE Y J. TERRY.
