UNDERWEMR.
Specification oi. Letters Patent.
Application filed October 10, 1912 Serial No. 7%,931.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known thatl, CHARLES A. GILMORE, a citizen of the United States, residing at McCoinb, in the county of Pike and State of Mississippi, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Underwear, of which the following is a specification. I
1y invention relates to improvements in underwear, and has for its leading object the provision of underwear which will ob Vite/the use of belts, garters, and other body encircling devices which tend to bind the person and stop the blood circulation.
Another object of the invention is to provide underwear of this nature, which while reliably supporting the outer garments, will at the same time have an elastic or giving movement to accommodate itself to the movements of the body.
A. further object of the invention is to provideamderwear which will support the weight of the outer garments and "its own weight/from the shoulders of the'wearer; which underwear will. be cool and comfortable to the body; which will have a hinge connection atthe waist line'to permit a free movement of the garments to permit the wearer to assume any desired osition without binding the body; and which will, in general, prove highly desirable and satisfactory in use.
To attain the desired objects, the invention consists of a suit of underwear equipped .with suitable suspension straps and attaching devices to support the weight of the gar ments and permit the movement of the suit of underwear to accommodate itself to the various positions of the body.
The invention further consists in certain details of construction and combinations of parts, substantially as disclosed herein.
Figure 1 is a front view of the underwear applied. Fig. 2 is a rear view of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail-view of one of the suspension straps which, in use, is fastened to the material ad acent the arm openings therein.
Fig. 4 is a detail View of the flexible tapes with attachments which support the socks and take the place of the customary garters, and Fig. 5 is a rear enlarged view of the underwear, illustrating particularly the application of the shoulder suspension straps.
The underweaimay be of any desired material, size, nahd thickness, but is preferably constructed of one piece of material to form what is known as a union suit.
' As previously stated, the principle of the present invention is to support all weight {from the shoulders of the wearer. For this purpose tapes A are provided, which pass over the shoulders of the wearer and are crossed at ll and extend downwardly along the logs of the wearer to form parallel strips C, terminating in ends to which are attached adjustable buckles I), connected by a loop E, to the tab F of the suspension straps G of thehose supporting means, which straps G are equipped with suitable hose clasps H. The tapes ii. are crossed at the waist lino J, as best shown in Fig. l, and at the waist line a fabric belt K is provided, equipped with suitable loops L, for attachment with the adjustable buckles M on the suspension straps ratentea'a r. snare.
N, whose upper ends are provided with fastenings O to fit over the elastic loops P, the ends of which are fastened by adjustable buckles Q to the circular loops R, which are sewed to the material ofthc garment around the arm openings thereof. From this construction, it will be seen that the tapes A are sewed to the garment and pass over the shoulders of the wearer at the points where the greatest weight will be brought to bear, and that said tapes are continued down along the legs of the wearer to form hose supporting means. it will also be noted that the tapes it are crossed at the waist belt J to form flexible hinges at each side of the body to provide means for accommodating the garment to every movement of the wearer, while to suitably support the trousers, the tapes R are sewed to the garment adjacent the arm openings thereof and are adjustably connected to the Waist band K by the flexible straps N, buckles Q, and elastic loops l.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and application of my improvements will be readily seen, and it will be apparent to all that the means herein illustrated for acccuuplishinp; the hereinbo fore stated objects will prove inexpensive, simple, comfortable, and entirely desirable and satisfactory from every point of view.
It will be understood that I provide what is known as a union suit or garment, havii tenings, and that connected to the waist band are the pair of shoulder members, and the pair of leg members which carry the stocking supporting devices, the detached means not interfering with the garment and supporting direct from the shoulder.
1. Underwear, con'iprising a garment, tapes sewed thereto and crossing the shoulders of the wearer and terminating in hose supporting means, at waist band sewed to the garment, and tapes sewed to the garment adjacent the arm openings and adjustahly connected with the waist band.
2. Underwear, comprising in combination, a garment, tapes passing over the shoulders of the wearer and crossed at the back and waist and terminating in hose supporting means, a fabric waist band attached to the garment, tapes secured to the garment and passing underthe arm openings thereof, and flexible and adjustable connections be tween said tapes and waist band.
3. In combination with an nndergarinent, a pair of tapessewed thereto and crossed at the back and waist band and extending downwardly along the legs in parallel strips, hose supporting devices connected to the 6X- tremities of said strips, a fabric to the garment under thereof, and suspension connecting band.
4. In combination with an undergarinent,
waist band. sewed to the garment, a pair of tapes sewed a pair of tapes secured thereto and providing hose supporting devices, awaist band connected to the garment, clrcular loops or tapes secured to the garment and passing around under each arm. opening, and flexible and adjustable connections liietwcen said tapes or loops and the waist band.
5. The improvement in underwear herein shown and described, comprising the union umlergarment formed with the aist strip, and the open waist portion, the pair of shoulder members, the waist COIITXPCilOllF carried by the vshoulder member; the pair of members passing around the back and secured at the crossing, and at the lower ends to the waist band, the pair of leg members connected at their upper ends to the waist band and having a loop at their lower ends, and a pair of stocking supporting members connected to the loops of the leg members.
6. in combination with a union undergarment, having a waist band and an open front provided with fastenings, of a pair of shoulder members secured to the waist band and a pair of leg members carrying stocking supporters, and suspended from the waist band.
In testimony whereof i aiiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
