Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 8, 1913.
Application filed. June 8, 1912. Serial No. 702,377.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN B. CARR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toys; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to toys, and has for its object to provide a device of this character, which may be wound up to be operated for some length of time.
A further object of the invention is to so construct the mechanism for operating the figures which may be operated to stop the motor, or to regulate the speed of the same.
ith these and other objects in view, this invention resides in the novel features of construction, formations, combinations and arrangements of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device. Fig. 2 is an end view. Fig. 3 is a top plan view. Fig. 1 is a sectional view on line- 44: of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a sectional view on line 5-5 of Fig. 2. Fig. 6 is a similar view on line 66 of Fig- 2.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates a base, upon end of which is mounted a spring motor 2. Extending transversely of the motor frame 3 is a shaft 1 which is rotated by the motor, and has fixed upon one of its ends a grooved pulley 5, the purpose of which will appear later.
Mounted intermediate the ends of the base 1, and upon the upper surface thereof is a plate 6, said plate having formed at its opposite end vertical uprights 7 the upper ends of which are provided with perforations 8, and in which is journaled a shaft 9. On one end of the shaft 9 is fixed a grooved wheel 10 which is arranged in direct alinement with the grooved pulley 5, the same being connected by a belt 11,whereby when the pulley 5 is rotated corresponding movement will be imparted to the wheel 10, thus rotating the shaft 9. Secured to the opposite end of the shaft 9 is a crank arm 12 which is provided with a pin 13 to which are pivotally connected the inner ends of the links 14, the outer ends of which are similarly connected to the figures 15, each figure being pivotally connected to a post 16 carried by the base 1.
Mounted adjacent one end of the base 1 is a post 17, which is spaced from the post 18 also mounted upon the base 1. Upon the upper end of the post 17 is pivotally connected a bell crank lever 19. Connecting one of the figures and one arm of the bell crank lever 19 is a link 20. Leading from the other arm of the bell crank lever is a link 21, one end of which is pivotally connected to a figure 22 pivotally mounted upon the post 18.
One end of the shaft 4 projects beyond the motor frame 3, and passes through the upper end of the boxing 23, said boxing having secured therein a filling block 2%, said filling block being formed with a threaded opening which registers with an opening 25 formed in the upper surface of the boxing 23. A set screw 26 is passed through the boxing 23, and has its lower end adapted to engage the shaft 1, so that upon adjustment of said screw, the speed of the shaft 4 may be regulated, or stopped, as the occasion may require, thus regulating the movement of the figures 15 and figure 22.
From this construction it will be seen that upon manipulation of the set screw 26, the pulley 5 will be permitted to rotate and thus impart rotary movement to the shaft 9, and owing to the bell crank lever 19 the figures will be oscillated to simulate tourists being accompanied by a guide, the guide being the figure designated by the numeral 22.
What is claimed is In a toy, the combination with a base, a plurality of posts mounted upon the edges of the base, figures pivotally mounted upon the posts, a shaft, a pulley carried thereby means for operating the shaft, a second shaft arranged transversely of the base and intermediate the ends thereof, a pulley carried by one end of the shaft, a belt connecting the first named shaft and pulley, a crank arm carried by the other end of the last named shaft, links having their inner ends pivotally connected to the crank arm and their outer ends similarly connected to the figures, a bell crank lever mounted upon In testimony whereof, I afiix my signaone of the posts, a link fgonneeting the crank ture in presence of two Witnesses.
lever an one of the 'ures, a third link connecting the bell eran lz and another one JOHN CARR 5 of the figures, whereby When firsbnamed Witnesses:
