To aZZ.wh0m t may concern: l
Be it known that I, Mnnnnrrrr G. STAND- United States, residing at Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Registering-Stamps, of which they following is va specification, reference being fnad therein to the accompanying drawing;V
This invention relates to hand stamps and has special reference to a novel form of registering stamp wherein'the character or characters printed on a sheet beneath the stamparealso recorded ona roll within the stamp so that afpermanent record thereof is obtained.
The principal object of the invention is to improve `and simplify A second object of the invention is to provide a device of this character wherein the necessity of rotating type carrying drums structed in accordance with this invention.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation with the casing broken away to show the interior. Fig. 3 is a detail side elevationpf the upper portion of a certain frame used in connection 4 is a detail section,v taken transversely t rough Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a detail section showing lthe manner ot holding the drums in osltion. Fig. 6 is a diagrammaticvview s owing the arrangement of the characters on thel flexible type bands used herewith. Fig. 7 shows a slightly modied form of the device. i
The invention consists of a frame composed of' a pair of plates 10 which are connected together at their upper and lower ends by l.means of cross bars 11 preferably octagonal in form. Between these plates 10 there is carried a stamp 12 provided with the general construction of devices of this character.I
the invention is to proa centrally disposed slot 13 bar 11 lies in position within said slot. EX- tendin around the members 11 is a series of exi le type bands 14 which are preferably of steel or the like, although woven tape may be used it desired. Eachfof these type bands carries two series of characters 15, the series being identical in disposition with each other. Projecting outwardly from each of the type bands 14 is an arm 16 having on its outer end a finger grip 17 It -is to be noted that the two series of characters on each band are so arranged that when a given character, as for instance the numeral 1 is held above the upper member 11, a similar character 1 will be held below the lower member 11.
Extending across the top of the frame formed by the platesl 20 are rods21 whereon are mounted rollers or drums 22. These rollers or drums are arranged in pairs and one drum of each pair of drums is provided with a ratchet 23 for purposes hereinafter to be described. v
Adjacent the upper end of each plate 10 there is a slot 24 'wherein is received a respective end of a cross bar 25 bearinor a pad 26. Surrounding these parts is a casing 27 wherein are formed slots 28 through which pass the arms 16,the slots being enlarged at their lower ends as at 29. The upper end of thecasing 27 is closedby means of a cap 20 whereon is secured a handle 31 having an opening` 32 therethrough. From this opening 32 and a suitable opening in the cap 30 extends a stem 33 to the upper end of which is secured a movable cap 34 which is normally held in position, as shown in Fig.J 1, by means of a coil spring 35 bearing at its lower end on the top of the handle 31 and at its upper end beneath the cap 34. Ori the stem 33 is also provided a collar 36 which limits the upward movement of the cap 34 under theinfluence of the spring. This stem is secured at its lower end to the cross bar 35. t
Secured to the sidewall of the casing 28 is a spring rack 37 which engages the ratchets 23. Extending from wall to wall of the casing 27 are rods 39 whereon are rollers or .drums 40 and on one of vthese drums is a ratchet '41. Secured to one of the plates 10 is a spring rack bar 42 which engages with the respective ratchet.
and a lower cross In the operation of the device there is 110 employed an ink ribbon 42 which passes over the character above the upper cross bar 11, and above this ink ribbon is a paper ribbon 43 which normally lies against the ink ribbon. n one of the drums 40 is wound a second ink ribbon 44 which passes out through a suitable slot 45 left between the edge of the pad l2- and the casing 2T, across the face of that pad, and up through a4 suitable slot 46 similarly disposed to the slot 45, the end being wound around the remainin drum 40.
It will be observed that as the cap 34 is depressed, a sheet of paper being placed beneath the stamp, the pad 26 will come down upon the paper and the paper ribbon 43 and cause the uppermost character 15 to be impressed thereon. At the same time the pad and the plates will slide downward in the casing and make an impression on the bill orI other sheet oi' paper placed beneath said pad.
It is intended that the device be provided with some suitable form of lock so that the parts can readily be disassembled but the same is not here-shown since it forms no speciic part of the invention. However,
when the device is unlocked it is intended that the cap 20 shall be free from the casing so that the latter may be trued up thus leaving the interior exposed since the 1inger grips 17 pass out through the enlarged portion 29 of the slots 28.- The paper and ink rollers may then be removed, if desired, or such of the paper roll as has been printed upon removed and the amount added up thus adording a close check on the amounts received by a collector, cashier, or other like person.
rlhere has thusibeen provided a simple and ehcient device of the kind described,v
and for the purposespecied.
It is obvious that many minor changes may be made in the form and construction thereof without departing from the material principles thereof, and 1t is therefore-not wished to confine the invention to the eXact form herein shown and described, but it is wished to include all such as properly come within the scope of the appended claims.
@ne minor change in this description is rillustrated in Fig. 7 where the plates 10 are carried straight down and the roll 39 journ naled directly therein. It is also to be observed that the rack bar 41 is carried on the side wall of the casing 27 rather than on the late, this being mande necessary as the rate iet 4l is now the moving part.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed asv new, is
l. In a device of the kind described, a plurality of endless bands each carrying duplicate series of printing characters, each series being consecutively arranged, a frame movably supporting said endless bands, rolls .supported in said frame and carrying a paper ribbon arranged to move over the endless bands at one end of said frame, inkcarrying means at each end of said frame, the ink-carrying means at the paper ribbon end lying between the paper ribbon and the endless bands, means to 'force the paper ribbon and frame downward in sequence, means to restore said frame to its; original position, and means to move said ribbons from said restoration.
3. In a device of the kind described, a casing, a frame movable within said casing1 means normally holding said frame raised, endless bands movably mounted in ysaid frame, each of said bands being provided with duplicate series of characters, the characters in each series being of like nature with the characters in the remaining series on the same band, a pair of drums supported at the upper end of said frame, ink iin-` pregnated ribbon carried by said drums and bearing against the upper characters on the endless bands, a second pair of drums at t-he upper end of said frame, an ,imprintreceiving ribbon carried by the second pair of drums and resting on the ink impregnated ribbon, a third pair of drums at the lower end of the frame, a second ink impregnated ribbon carried b the third pair of drums, and resting agalnst the bottom characters on each endless band, and means simultaneously to obtain pressure between the imprint receiving means and the upper ink ribbon and between the lower ink ribbon and a surface beneath the casing.`
4. In a device of the kind described, a cas ing, a frame ,movablewithin said casing1 means normally holding said frame raised, endless bands movably mounted in said frame, each of said bands being provided with duplicate series of characters, the
characters in each series being of like nature i y l l 1,058,008 a nated ribbon, a third pair of drums at the drum rotating means actuated by the movei101 lower end of the frame, a second ink imment'of the frame within the casing. pregnated ribbon carried by the third pair vIn-testimony whereof I hereunto aix my of drums, and restingilagailstdthe bottom signature in presence of two witnesses. characters on each en ess an means simultaneously to obtain pressure between the MEREDIT-H' G STANDLEY' imprint receiving means andthe upper ink Witnesses:
ribbon and between the lower ink ribbon L. N. GILLIS,
and the surface beneath the casing, and Ross J. WooDwARD.
