UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM B. SMITH, OF BUFFALO, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO BUFFALO LEATHER CO., OF BUFFALO, NEW YORK, A CORPORATION OF WEST VIRGINIA.
GAS-BURNER.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM B. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gas-Burners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to gas burners for consuming acetylene or other illuminating gas, and it has for its object to provide a burner adapted to emit a luminous flame in a highly heated chamber or inclosure where the temperature is so high that a satisfactory combustion cannot be produced by the use of an ordinary gas burner.
Hy invention is embodied in a gas burner having means for supplying fresh relatively cool air to the external surface of the flame emitted by the burner, in suflicient quantity to support or satisfy combustion, so that a luminous flame may be produced in a relatively hot inclosure.
Of the accompanying drawings which form a part of this specification,Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a burner embodying my invention; Fig. 2 represents a section on line 22 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 represents a top view of the burner; Fig. 4 represents a section through the pillar portion of the burner, on line 14 of Fig. 2, removed from the casing portion; Fig. 5 represents a section through the casing portion on line 55 of Fig. 2, the pillar portion being removed; Fig. 6 represents a side view of the burner tip.
Similar reference characters indicate the same parts in all the figures.
My improved burner is composed of a casing 12 having ears 13 adapted to be screwed to a suitable support or holder. The casing 12 has an internal air chamber and a nipple let to which an air supply pipe may be attached. Said casing is provided with annular inwardly projecting seats. 15, 16, forming, with the pillar 17 next described, an annular air chamber or passage 18 communicating with the nipple 14. The seats 15, 16 are tapered and adapted to'have a .tight frictional fit on tapered enlargements 19, 20, on the pillar 17. Said pillar is tubular and adapted to conduct gas, and has a I Specification of Letters Patent.

refractory tip 21, of any suitable material such as lava, the tip having a slit or gas outlet 22. The tip may be of any suitable construction adapted to burn acetylene or other illuminating gas which is admitted through a branch or nipple 23 at the lower end of the pillar.
The upper seat 16 in the burner casing 12 is provided with a series of small grooves 24, Fig. 5, which constitute outlets adapted to deliver small jets of air upwardly against the outer surface of the gas flame burning at the tip 21. These air jets unite and form an annular jet surrounding the flame and supplying sufficient oxygen to satisfy combustion in a highly heated inclosure, so that a brilliant flame is insured.
The described burner is particularly useful for illuminating (as well as heating) the interior of an oven employed for baking or vulcanizing patent leather. It is, of course, adapted for use in other heated inclosures.
I claim 1. An illuminating gas burner comprising a chambered casing having annular seats at the top and bottom of the chamber and an air inlet between said seats, and a burner pillar closely fitting said seats and forming the inner wall of an annular air passage communicating with said inlet, one of said seats being provided with a plurality of air outlets adapted to project jets of air upon.
