UNITED STATES PATENT GFFTCE.
HARVEY P. MoFARLANl I), OF MILTON, IOWA. I
HINGE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, I'IARVEY P. MoFAR- LAND, a citizen of the United States, resid ing at Milton, in the county of Van Buren and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hinges, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to hinges and'has special reference to hinges adjusted laterally in order to accommodate shrinkage, wear, and other variations in the width of a gate.
The principal object of this invention is the production of a simple and etficient adjusting means whereby the hinge may be adjusted laterally without detaching any portions of the hinge.
Another object of this invention is the production of a simple and efficient pawl and ratchet means which will efficiently hold the hinge in an adjusted position and which pawl will be efliciently braced owing to the manner in which the same is mounted upon the hinge frame.
WVith these and other objects in view, this invention consists of certain novel constructions, combinations and arrangements ofparts, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings :Figure 1 is a frontview of the hinge showing the same attached to a portion of a gate. Fig. 2 is a fragmentary longitudinal section of a portion of the hinge showing the improved pawl attached thereto. Fig. 3 is a section taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a fragmentary top plan view of one end of the hinge frame.
By referring to the drawing by numerals, it will be seen that 1 designates the frame of the hinge which is provided with a plurality of laterally extending ears 2 through which screws or other suit-able fastening means 3 pass for holding the frame 1 in engagement with the gate. The frame 1 is provided with a centrally arranged longitudinally extending slot 4 to facilitate the sliding of the adjusting member 5 of the hinge longitudinally relative to the frame 1 by inserting a tool behind the rear end 6 of the adjusting member 5. The slot 4: is provided with closed ends as indicated at 7 in Fig. 1. The frame 1 is also provided upon Specification of Letters Patent.

its upper end with a pair of pawl supporting ears 8 which are placed opposite and spaced fro-m the upper securing ears 2 of the frame. These ears 8 are so formed upon the frame as to facilitate the removal of the pawl fro-1n one end of the hinge and bracing the same upon the opposite end in case the gate upon which the hinge is adapted to be placed opens in a. difierent direction from that as indicated in Fig. 1. The ears 8 are provided with apertures 9 through which the pivot pin 10 passes for pivotally securing the pawl 11 between the ears 8 and 2.
The pawl 11 comprises an elongated body having a thickened or weighted outer end 12 terminating in a downwardly extending ratchet engaging tooth 13. The downwardly extending portion of the pawl 11 is so formed as to fit snugly up against the shoulder 14 formed upon the end of, the frame 1 when the tooth engaging portion 13 engages the ratchetteeth 15 formed upon the adjusting member 5, as is clearly illustrated in Fig. 2. The frame 1 is cut away slightly at its top to receive the pawl 11 as is indicated in Figs. 2 and 1. It will, therefore, be seen that in view of the fact that the pawl 11 is so pivotally secured between the ears 2 and 8 and between the front and rear plates 16 and 17, the pawl will be braced against lateral movement and the lateral strain will be relieved from the pivot pin 10. It will be further seen that the strain of the gate pressing upon the pawl will be taken up between the teeth 15 of the adjusting member 5 and the shoulder 14 thereby relieving the strain from the pivot pin 10 of the pawl as the pressure will be directly against the shoulder 14:. The outer end of the adjustable member is provided with an eye 18 which is engaged by a pintle pin 19 connecting the gate to an anchor post.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that a very simple and eflicient adjusting device has been produced for holding the adjusting member of the hinge in a set adjusted position, and it will be further obvious that an efficient means has been produced whereby the weight of the gate will be relieved from the pivot pin 10 of the pawl owing to the fact that the pawl 11 will be clamped between the shoulder 14 and one of the teeth 15 thereby preventing any swinging movement of the pawl upon the pin 10.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is
An adjustable hinge of the character described comprising a frame, a sliding member provided with a plurality of ratchet teeth secured thereto, means for connecting said sliding member to a support, a plurality of ears carried at each end upon the top of said frame, a pawl adapted to be supported between two of said ears, said pawl comprising an elongated body having a widened outer end terminating in a clownwardly extending ratchet tooth engaging portion, a pivot pin pivotally connecting said pawl to said ears, a shoulder formed upon said frame and adapted to be engaged by the rear face of said pawl for limiting 20 the inward swinging movement of said pawl whereby the pressure will be relieved from the pivot pin of said pawl, and said frame provided with side plates extending beyond said shoulder for constituting means for 25 preventing the lateral swinging of said pawl relative to said frame.
In testimony whereof I hereunto ailiX my signature inpresence of two witnesses.
