Description

J. LYNCH. RAIL BREAKING DEVICE. APPLICATION FILED AUG. 16, 1911.
1,057,862. Patented Apr. 1, 191s.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH. LYNCH, 0F PARSONS, KANSAS.
RAIL-BREAKING- DEVICE.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOSEPH LYNCH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Parsons, in the count-y of Labette and State of Kansas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Rail-Breaking Devices, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention provides an appliance by the use of which railway rails, angle beams and kindred metal bars may be quickly broken into short lengths at a saving of labor and time.
The invention consists of the novel features, details of construction and combination of parts, which hereinafter will be more particularly set forth, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the drawing, forming a part of the specification, Figure 1 is a side view of an implement embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the implement,
, a portion of the handle being broken away.
Fig. 3 is a section on the line m--w of Fig. 1, looking to the left. Fig. et is a section on the line ww of Fig. 1, looking to the right. Fig. 5 is a detail view, showing the manner of using the device.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description, and indicated in all the views of the drawings, by the same reference characters.
The implement consists of a bar 1 which constitutes a lever, the same having an integral projection 2 near one end, said projection having a foot piece 3 to support the lever when in operation. One end of the lever is widened vertically, as indicated at 4, and has a slot 5 extending lengthwise thereof. A grapple 6 has its members con nected by means of links 7 with the slotted end of the lever 1. The grapple 6 comprises two members which cross each other and are pivotally connected at the point of crossing. When the ends of the members of the grapple are brought together the rail, beam, or other article to be separated is gripped between the jaws of the grapple and by reason of the greatlength of the long arm of the lever from the projection 2 an extraordinary force is developed which causes separation of the rail at the required point.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed August 16, 1911.
Patented Apr. 1, 1913.
Serial No. 644,290.
In Fig. 5, which shows a practical application of the invention, two rails C are placed upon two rails A A and the rail B to be broken is placed upon the rails C. The implement is adjusted with the grapples engaging the head of the rail A and with the offstanding projection 2 engaging the web of the rail B. The base and the head of the rail B are nicked by means of a chisel and sledge and upon applying power to the outer end of the lever l the rail B is snapped in line wit-h the nicks.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the advantages of the construction and of the method of operation will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains, and while I have described the principle of operation of the invention, together with the device which I now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that the device shown is merely illustrative, and that such changes may be made when desired as are within the scope of the claims appended hereto.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new, is
1. A device of the character set forth comprising a lever having an offstanding part near one end, and having a longitudinally extending slot in its short arm, and a grapple arranged in the plane of the lever and having its members connected with the slotted end of the lever.
2. A device of the character set forth comprising a lever having an offstanding part near one end forming a long arm and a short arm, and having the short arm formed with a longitudinally extending slot, a grapple arranged in the plane of the lever, and links connecting the members of the grapple with the slotted end of the lever.
In testimony whereof I affiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH LYNCH.
WVitnesses FRANK J.'RosKoB, CHARLES E. TURNER.
