WHIP-SOCKET.
specification of Lettersl Patent.
Patented Apr. 1, 1913.
Application filed August 20, 1912. Serial No. 716,052.
To all whomv t may concern:
Be it known that l, STEPHEN A. Lnsuo, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kulpmont, in the county of Northumberland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in lVliip-Sockets, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to carriages and wagons and has for an object to provide a whip socket therefor.
The invention embodies, among other features, a device adapted to receive the butt end of a whip and retain the same inA position against accidental displacement from the whip socket, the whip being also secured in the socket in a manner which will prevent rattling of the whip when the Vehicle having the socket attached thereto operates over the ground.
In the further disclosure of the invention reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, constituting a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference denote corresponding part-s in all the views, and in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the whip socket; Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 2 2 in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a fragmentary vertical transverse sectional view taken on the line 3-3 in Fig. t; Fig. -t is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line 44 in Fig. 3; and Fig. 5 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line 5-5 in Fig. 2.
Referring more particularly to the views, use is made of a tubular casing 10 having the upper end thereof flared and having the lower end thereof closed by a base 11 having threaded connection with the casing 10, the mentioned casing 10 being adapted for attachment to a vehicle in any desired manner.
A securing plate 12 is mounted on the upper face of the base 11, within the casing 10, the said securing plate being provided with a clasp member 13 of a spring-like nature and adapted to receive therein a knob 14, preferably formed of one end of a screw 15 secured to the under side of the butt end 16 of a whip 17. A seat member 18 is mounted within the casing 10 to repose upon the plate 12, the said seat member being provided with an opening 19 through which the clasp member 13 projects as shown in Fig. 2, with the sides of the o-pening 19 inclined upwardly so that the seat member 18 will constitute a guide to more readily guide the knob 14 on the butt end 16 of the whip 17 into engagementwith the clasp member 13 as will be readily understood, the lower end of the whip 17 being adapted to repose upon Jdie seat member 1S when the knob lil is engaged with the clasp member 13.
A gripping member 20 is mounted in the casing 10 a slight distance below the upper end thereof and the said gripping member consists of similar plates 21, 22 the plate 21 being secured rigidly in the casing by a screw 23 and having extended therefrom contractile helical springs 211 having their free ends secured to the plate 22, an opening 25 being formed in the casing 10 to permit of mounting the plates 21, 22 therein with the sides of the opening 25 forming a guideway 26 for the plate 22 and upon which the plate 22 is adapted to slide. The plates 21, 22 are cut away to form semi-circular portions 27 constituting an opening 28 through which the whip 17 is passed when the plates are mounted in the casing 10 in the manner mentioned and as will be seen by referring to Fig. 1.
In the use or" the device, when the whip is placed within the casing, the extreme butt end of the whip engaging the inclined sides of the plates 21, 22 constituting the gripping member 20, will force the plates apart against the contractile action of the springs 24 and when the whip is lowered in the casing the knob 14: will engage the clasp member 13 while the lower extremity of the whip will repose upon the seat member 1S,
it being understood that as the whip is lowered in the casing the plates 21, 22 will grip the periphery of the whip in view of the contractile action of the springs 211, thus preventing any rattling of the whip in the whip socket. Whips usually taper from the butt end toward the lash end and therefore when a whip is inserted in the casing 10 it will be readily understood that at the moment the eXtreme butt end of the whip engages the gripping member 20 and passes through the opening 25, the plates 21, 22 will be moved apart their greatest distance and as the whip is lowered in the casing the plate 22 Will move inwardly, dne to the action ot' the springs 24, and grip the Whip in the socket.
Having thus described my invention, I Claim:
l. In a Whip socket., the combination with a easing, ot'a Whip for reception therein, a plate in the easing, a clasp member on the said plate, a knob extended from the butt end of the Whip and adapted to engage the clasp member when the Whip is inserted in the casing, a gripping plate rigidly mounted within the said Casing to engage the said Whip, springs projecting from the said gripping plate, and a second gripping plate mounted to slide in the easing and having the said springs connected thereto, the said second gripping` plate being arranged oppositely to t-he first gripping plate to grip the said whip When the same is inserted in the said easing.
2. In a Whip socket, the combination with a easing, of a Whip for reception therein, a
plate in the said easing, a clasp member on the said plate, a knob on the said Whip and adapted to engage the said Clasp member when the Whip is inserted in the easing, a seat mounted on the said plate and encircling the said clasp member, a gripping plate rigidly mounted in the easing, and a second gripping plate mounted to slide in the easing and adapted to engage the Whip when the same is inserted therein.
3. In a whip socket, the combination with a easing, ot a Whip for reception therein, a plate in the said Casing, a Clasp member on the said plate, a knob on the said Whip and adapted to engage the said clasp member when the Whip is inserted in the easing, a seat mounted on the saidplate and encircling the said clasp member, a gripping plate rigidly mounted in the easing, a second gripping plate mounted to slide in the easingl and ,adapted to engage the Whip when the same is inserted therein, and contractile springs projecting from the iii-st mentioned gripping plate and secured to the second mentioned gripping plate to retain the seoond mentioned gripping plate in gripping position. l
et. In a Whip socket, the combination with a casing, of a Whip for reception therein, a plate in the said easing, a clasp member on the said plate, a knobon the said Whip and adapt ed to engage the said clasp member When the whip is inserted in the easing, a seat mounted on the said plate and encircling the said clasp member, la gripping plate rigidly mounted in the easing, a second gripping plate mounted to slide in the easing vand adapted to engage the whip when the same is inserted therein, 'contractile springs projecting trom the first mentioned gripping plate and secured to the second mentioned gripping plate to retain the second mentioned gripping plate in gripping position, and a guideway formed in the said casing by out-ting an opening therein, the said second mentioned gripping plate being slidable on the said guideway.
In testimony Wliereo'tl I atlix my signature inpresence of two Witnesses.
