To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, AN'rHoN H. ANDER- SEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Spring Valley, in the county of Pierce and State of lVisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Match- Igniting Devices for Lanterns, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to improvements in match igniting devices for lanterns and has for its primary object to provide an extremely simple, eflicient and durable device of this character which may be embodied in various forms of lanterns now in common use, and which will efficiently perform the function for which the same is devised.

Another object of the invention resides in the provision of a burner plate provided with a radially extending guide way for the match, said plate having a central opening to receive the burner head, said burner head being provided with a roughened sur face for engagement by the head of the match, and means closing the inner end of said opening.

Still another object of the invention resides in the provision of a draft plate for lantern burners, and means provided on said plate whereby the wick of the lantern may be ignited in a strong wind without danger of the match being extinguished.

\Vith the above and other objects in View as will become apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain constructions, combinations and arrangements of the parts that I shall hereinafter fully describe and claim.

For a full understanding of the invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a lantern of conventional form provided with a draft plate in which my improved match igniting device is embodied; Fig. 2 is a section taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the draft plate and burner head.

The invention to be hereinafter specifically set forth constitutes a division of the subject matter disclosed in my p'rior application for patent, filed June 12,- 1912, Serial Number 703,292, and relates particularly to Specification of Letters Patent.

perforated draft plate 5 is provided at its outer edge with the clamping members 6 which are adapted to engage over the lower beaded edge of a globe or chimney indicated at C to hold the same in its proper position in the lantern frame. The draft plate may be mounted in the frame of the lantern as shown in my prior application, or in any other approved and well known manner. This drift plate is provided with the usual central opening 7 to receive the burner head 8. At opposite ends of the slot in said burner head through which the wick exroughened as indicated at 9. This burner head is also provided at opposite points with recesses 10 to receive the upstanding lugs 11 formed upon the edge of the opening 7 in the draft plate at diametrically 0pposite points.

The draft plate 5 has formed upon its under surface a radially disposed guide way 12. The outer end of this guide way opens upon the periphery of the plate while the inner end thereof opens upon the upper surface of the draft plate at a point adjacent to the central opening therein. The upper wall of this guide way may be roughened as indicated at 13, though this is not an essential requirement in order to fulfil the objects of the invention.

The inner end of the tubular guide way 12 is adapted to be closed by means of a substantially triangular shaped plate 14 which is pivotally mounted as at 15 upon the upplate is provided with an arcuate slot 16 to receive a pin 17 which is adapted to be fitted into an aperture in the plate 1% whereby said plate may be moved over the inner end of the guide opening 12 after the lantern wick has been ignited.

In lighting the lantern, the match is inserted into the outer end of the guide way 12, and the head of the match engaged with the roughened wall surface thereof as the match is moved inwardly. In the event that the match does not flame in its movement through the guide opening, the head thereof striking against one of the roughened surfaces 9 of the burner head will produce the In putting the invention into practice, the

After the lantern wick has thus been ignited, the match is withdrawn from the guide opening in the burner plate and the pin 17 is connected to the plate 14 by passing the pin through the slot 16 in the burner plate and engaging the same in the aperture in the pivoted plate 14;. This plate is now moved or swung until the same is positioned over the inner end of the guide opening 12, thus obviating liability of air drafts entering through said guide opening and extinguishing the flame of the wick.

It will of course be apparent that if desired, the guide openings 12 may be provided in the draft plate at diametrically opposite points. By the provision of the upstanding lugs 11 at the edges of the central opening in the draft plate which engage in the recesses in the burner head, said burner head may be quickly adjusted in the opening in the draft plate to dispose the roughened surface portion 9 thereof opposite to the inner end of thematch receiving opening 12.

From the foregoing, it is believed that the construction and manner of operation of my improved match igniting device will be clearly understood. The same is simple in its construction and of great convenience in )ractical use. The invention maybe emodied in lanterns of ordinary construction without materially increasing the expense incident to their manufacture.

It will of course be apparent that the device is susceptible of considerable modification in the form, proportion and arrange ment of the several elements without departing from the essential features or sacri ficing any of the advantages thereof.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is:

1. In a lantern, a burner and draft plate therefor, said plate having a central opening to receive the burner head, a guide way in said draft plate opening at one end upon the upper surface of said plate adjacent to the opening therein, a friction surface on the burner head to be engaged by the head of a match projected through said guide 3. In a lantern, a burner and draft plate therefor, said draft plate being provided with a radially disposed guide way, a roughened surface portion on the burner head at the inner end of the guide way to be engaged by the head of a match projected through said guide way, and an imperforate plate pivotally mounted upon the draft plate adapted to be moved over the inner open end of the guide way to close the same.

In a lantern, a burner and draft plate therefor, said draft plate being provided with a radially disposed guide way, said burner having a roughened surface opposed to the inner open end of the guide way and adapted to be engaged by the head of the match when projected through the guide way, a plate pivotally mounted upon the upper surface of the draft plate, said draft plate having a slot to permit of the actuation of the pivoted plate whereby the same may be moved over the inner open end of the guide way to close the same.

5. In a lantern, a draft plate provided with a central opening and upstanding lugs on the edge of the opening at opposite points, a burner head having recesses to receive said lugs, said head being provided upon opposite sides and between the lugs with roughened surface port-ions, and a radially disposed guide way formed upon the draft plate to receive the match and direct the head thereof against one of the roughened surfaces of the burner head.
