SMOKE-BOX SUPERI-IEATER.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, SAMUEL M. VAU- cLAIN, a citizen of the United States, residing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improyements in Smoke- Box Superheaters, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to certain improvements in the deflectors used in smoke box superheaters, such as claimed in my application for patent filed December 7th, 1905, under Serial Number 290,796.
The object of my invention is to so co-nstruct the deflector casing as todirect the products of combustion, as they escape from the tubes of a boiler, toward the superheater section on each side of the smo-ke box, so that on their return they will pass from the center of the casing to the stack.
In the accompanying drawings :-Figure l, is a longitudinal sectional view of a smoke box superheat-er illustrating my invention; Fig 2, is a sectional view on the line 2 2, Fig. l; Fig. 3, is a perspective view of the casing illustrated in Fig. l; Fig. 4, is a sectional view of a modification; and Fig. 5, is a perspective view of the modiiication of the casing illustrated in Fig. 4.
In the present instance A is the boiler of a locomotive having tubes a; B is the smoke box; C is the stack having the petticoat pipe c and under this is an extension c of the petticoat pipe directly above the nozzle F communicating with the exhaust from the cylinders of the locomotive. The outer end of the smoke box is closed by the usual casing B having a door or detachable cap ZJ, so that accessmay be had to th-e interior of the smoke box.
E, E are the two superheater sections, one mounted on one side of the smoke box and the other on the opposite side, and each superheater section consists of an 'upper header e and a lower header e connected by tubes e2; the tubes preferably conform ing to the shape of the shell of the superheater, as shown. This construction leaves the center of the smoke box clear of any obstructions, so that access may be had to its interior. The superheater sections are connected in the present instance, through a coupling a', to the steam supply pipe a2 communicating with the steam space of the boiler.

In order to direct the products of combustion so that they will pass between the tubes o'f the superheater, I provide a cylindrical shell D having a conical end D terminating about the middle of the front tube sheet of the boiler in close proximity to the tubes. This conical end deiects the products o-f combustion and the tube extending practi-l cally the full length of the superheater sections to a point near the front casing B of the smoke box the draft will cause the vproducts of combustion to ret-urn through the cylindrical shell to the petticoat pipe and then pass to the stack. By this construction the cinders and other foreign matter will be carried to the forward end of the smoke box and settle at the point x, ratherthan at the inner end against the tube sheet.
A screen g is provided, extending diagonally from the upper forward end of the tubular shell to the upper end of the nozzle, as illustrated in Fig. l, so as to prevent the escape of large cinders and yet give suliicient area for the free passage of the products of combustion to the stack.
In Figs. l and 3, I have shown an extension D2 having a wedge shaped end l depending from the lower side of the cylindrical shell; the edge of the wedge terminating at the end of the cone. This extension incloses the nozzle F, as illustrated, and carries the products of combustion away from the nozzle. A screen g preferably extendsfrom the nozzle forward into the wedge shaped section Z so as to prevent the escape of cinders through this point, and the products of combustion not only pass freely through the center of the` tubular shell but down to the lower portions of the smoke box and up through the screen g. This is of special advantage where an extended screen area is desired.
In some instances I may make the tubular shell as illustrated in Fig. 4; the shell D3 being entirely closed at the bottom d on a line with the upper end of the nozzle F.
It will be seen by the above construction that a shell can be readily made and adjusted in position which will deflect the products of combustion properly through the two sections of the superheater and will allow the products of combustion to return through the center of the smoke box to the stack, leaving the center unobstructed with the exception of the screen, which can be removed when it is necessary to gain access to the interior of the cylindrical shell.
The shell in the present instance is secured to the upper and lower headers of the superheater sections by bolts i, c', but other means of securing the shell in position may be resorted to without departing from the essential features of the invention.
The diameter of the tubular shell and the extent of screen surface will be regulated also according to the type of boiler and the fuel used.
I claim l. The combination of a locomotive boiler having a smoke-box at one end, superheater sections at each side of the smoke-box, a cylindrical shell extending longitudinally in the smoke-box and having a closed conical rear end and a depending tapered extension therefrom, an exhaust pipe entering the shell at its top and a nozzle entering the shell at its bottom within and protected by said depending extension.
2. The combination of a locomotive boiler having a smoke-box at one end, a super heater section at each side of the smoke-box, a cylindrical shell extending longitudinally in the box and open at its underside and having a closed conical rear end and a screen within the cylindrical shell and in line downwardly and rearwardly, whereby the products of combustion after passing the superheater return through the center of the shell and the cinders are directed downwardly through the open bottom of the shell.
