YUNITED STATES PATENT FFICE- ENOS L. STOIITZFUS, OF GAP, AND ISAAC B. MILLER, 0F PARADISE, PENNSYLVANIA AUTOMATIC DUMP-CAR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented npr. 1,1913.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that we, ENos L. SroLTzFUs and ISAAC B. MILLER, citizens of the United States, residing at Gap and Paradise, respectively, in the county of Lancaster and Stateof Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Dump-Cars, of which the following is a speciiication, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to an automatic railway dump car of that class which may be employed for coal, grain', stone, etc., and our present invention constitutes an improvement over Letters Patent- No. 928,286, issued to us on July 20, 1909.
The object of the present invention is to adapt the idea embodied in the above referred to patent to eight wheel double truck cars, such as may be used for coal, grain, etc., and in which means are employed whereby the car wheels do not leave the main track as is the case inthe above referred to patent.
Another object of the invention is to provide a simple, durable, cheap and efficient car of this class.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a car that shall be capable of being dumped in an automat-ic manner while the train is in progress and running in either direction, thus being especially1 adaptable to the unloading of coal and grain.
With these and other objects in view, our invention consists in certain construction and combination of parts as will hereinafter be fully described and claimed in the annexed specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings which form a part of this application, and in which like figures of reference refer to corresponding parts in all of the views; but it is fully understood that while we have here described our invention as shown, that we do not confine ourselves to the exact design, as slight changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of the several parts without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings Figure 1, is a side elevation of an eight wheeled car embodying our invention, and shown in the act of dumping. Fig. 2, is a top plan view of the same with the body removed to show the details of construction. Fig. 3, is an end Parallel to said main truck 1, and outside of the same at asuitable distance are secured the inclined operating rails 3, which are supported on the uprights 4, and provided with the horizontal apex rail 5, of any desired length, the same depending upon the time required to empty the car of its contents.
The eight wheeled car as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3, comprises a body 6, of any suitable design provided with an end gate or door 7, mounted to swing outward and held by a catch 8, in a normally closed position; and the two four-wheeled trucks 9, of the usual design and which are pivotally mounted to the bolsters 10, which are secured to the side frames 11. Said side frames 11, extend beyond the ends of the car body 6, and are connected by the usual bumper bar 12, to which is mounted the draw-bar 13. The car body 6, is of less width t-han said frame, and is provided near its end with bearing blocks 1li, which coact with bearings 15, which are secured to the rear bolster 10, and which are joined by the shaft 16, upon which the car body 6, rocks. The forward bolster 10, is provided with the U-shaped bearing blocks 17, which are adapted to receive the shaft 18, which is secured by the blocks 19, by the car 6, when the car body 6, is in a lowered position. rllhe proper register of the body 6, with the frame 11, is secured by the guides 20, which are secured to saidfframe 11, said guides 20 are slightly curved outward to engage the sides of the body as the same descends to its place. To secure the body 6, in place is provided a locking means 21, entering a -plate 22, on the frame 11, and secured by a pin or lock. The ends of the shaft 18, are bent upward by the side of the car body 6, and provided with the dump wheels 23, which are flanged and register with and run upon the dump or operating rails 3, to raise the body 6, as shown in Fig. 1, and as fully explained in our patent above referred to.
The four wheeled car as shown in Figs.
4, 5, and 6, comprises a frame 24, mounted on four wheels 25; one end of the car body 26, provided with a gate 27, and said body provided near the same end with bearing boXes 28, within which rotates the axle 29; so that the body tips from the aXie, and when in a lowered position rests upon the frame 24E, and is operated by the wheels 30, in a similar manner to the eight wheeled ear.
Having thus described our invention what we eiaiin as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is In a dump car of the class described, the combination with the truck frame, of a car body hingedly secured near one end thereof, body raising wheels projecting from the sides of said car body near theother end ENOS L. STOLTZFUS. SAAC MILLER.
