Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, NELLIE MCDEVITT, a citizen of Canada, residing at Edmonton, in the Province of Alberta, Canada, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Combined Ironing-Boards and Clothes- Horses, of which improvement the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in laundry appliances, and has for its objects to provide a folding ironing board, the main frame or support thereof constituting a clothes-horse within which the board is adapted to be folded to reduce space when not in use, said board being further provided with foldable means to prevent the clothing being ironed from touching the floor.

With the above objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, and in certain parts, improvements, and combinations as will be hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the appended claims.

In describing the invention in detail, reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, wherein- Figure 1 is a front elevation of the ironing board and attending frame as it would appear ready for use. Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the device as it would appear when folded. Fig. 4 is a sectional side elevation of the folded board, taken on the line XX of Fig. 3, in which views all like detail parts are designated by like numerals of reference.

As shown in the drawings, the main frame comprises the two vertical standards 1 and 1, each having a suitable base 2, said standards being united at their upper ends by cross-bars 3 and 3, the extreme upper ends of said standards having each pivoted thereto a plurality of bars 4, said crossbars 3 and 3', and the pivoted bars 4 which are capable of being turned outwardly, as shown, being adapted to support clothing, etc., when ironed.

Pivotally attached to the inner side of each of the standards, by a pin or bolt 5, is a horizontally disposed bar 6 and an angularly disposed leg 7 an ironing board 8 being attached to one of said bars 6 by hinges 9 at one of its ends and secured to the other board being further provided at its upper rear edge with a long cleat 16 extending lengthwise thereof and pivotally attached thereto by a pin 17, the underside of said board being provided with a vertically disposed leg 18 attached to the rear thereof by a hinge 19, the board being strengthened by a pair of transverse battens 20.

To fold up the boards, the ironing board 8 and bars to which it is attached, is raised and thrown back between the standards, as

indicated by the dotted arrow in Fig. 2, and Figs. 3 and 4. The leg 18 of the under board 14 is then raised, as shown by the dotted arrow in Fig. 2, after which said board and the legs are folded together and elevated, as shown by the dotted arrow in Fig. 2, to the position between the standards, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, the long cleat 16 being then turned down and the two boards locked together by passing the end of said cleat beneath the cleat 11 of the ironing board, the two boards and legs being further secured by the hooks 21 being passed into the eye bolts 22 on the legs 12, said board when so folded occupying but small space and may be readily unfolded for use with but little trouble. v

It will be observed that the under board 14 is about flush on its outer edge with the outer edge of the ironing board so as to not interfere with operating on the ironing board, and, that the inner edge of said under board extends for some distance beyond the inner edge of the ironing board so as to prevent the garments, etc., being ironed coming into contact with the floor and being soiled.

Having thus shown and described-my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:

1. The combination of a pair of standards connected to one another by cross-bars, a horizontally disposed ironing board pivotally connected at its inner edge to and between the standards and extending outwardly therefrom, two pairs of crossed legs each pair pivotally connected at their crossed portion, the upper end of one leg of each pair being pivotally connected to and between the standards upon the same pivot as the ironing board, the upper end of the other leg of each pair supporting the forward edge of the ironing board, and a board extendin along parallel to and beneath the ironing board the ends thereof carrying the pivots of and connecting the same to the crossed portion of said legs, the inner edge of said board projecting beyond the inner edge of the ironing board, and said boards and legs adapted to be folded between the a standards with the ironing board positioned beneath the other board.
