IMPROVEMENT IN VENT lIE'OR CASKS.
` i The Schedule referred to in these `Lettere Patent and making part of the same.
, I, WILLIAMAsooUGmof the city of Buifalo, iu the countyoi' Erie andiState of New York, have invented arcertain new" and improved Vent for Beer-Casks, of
whiclrt-he followingis a specification.
- M'y invention relates tothe arrangement of a valve, which lis suspended upon` a rack operated b y a pinion, in combination with a plug havingavertical bore, containing theirack, ahorizontal` bore/as a bearing for the pinion, audits shaft and key, another small 'passage communicating with the vertical bore, furthe` admis- `sion of air thereto. i
In the accompanying drawing-, i
5, Figure is a vertical section of my vent. g Figure II is ahorzontal section, showing a modification ot thesame.
Letters of `like name-.andkiudrefer to like parts in each of thefigures.
. A; represents a vent-plug, having a vertical bore, al,
another. at right` angles thereto, as shown at a?, and an air-passage, b.V i v `G-represents a valve at `the bottom of the vertical bore, which valve opens downwardly, and is attached toa vertical rod, D, provided with cogs or teeth" near `its upper` end.
E represents a, pinion, which gears with the toothed bar or rack 1),; and, by its revolutions around its axis,
. either raises or lowers the'rack, andrthereby closes or `:opens the valve `suspended thereon.
F represents a key, which may either be made part of theshaft of the pinion which projects through the horizontal bore @L2-to the outside of the plug, as in Fig. I, or it may be separate and removable, like' the key of a clock. In the latter case the end of the shaft of the pinion is made square, as shown in Fig. II.`
This improved veut-plug is well adapted for use in the place ofthe common .plug now applied hy brewers to barrels' and kegs sold to retailers, the brewer to furnish the plug wit-hout ythe key, and the retailer to own and use the key as above described.
Another advantage gained by the use of this vent with detached key, is that, in private houses where beer, ale, 'or porter is constantly kept on draught, servants and their friends may be deprived of the omini-trinity oi' helping themselves to these beverages, by retainingV the key in custody of the master or mistress of the house.. f
This veut, with the key madepart of the pinionshaf'tfis simple and cheap, and admirably adapted for general use. j
I claim as my invention- The plug A, having a vertical bore, a), horizontal bore and lair-passage b, the valve C, ltoothed bar i D, pinion, E, and key F, said'parts being constructed,
arranged, and operating substantially as herein described.- l
" l WM. ASOUGH.
