specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 25, 19t3.
Application filed April 6, 1912. Serial No. 689,023.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that we, DAVID FELDHAMER and Vieron LIVINGSTON, citizens ofk the United States, residing at New York, New York county, New York, and Elmhurst, Queens county, New York, respectively, have invented new and useful Improvements in Tombstones, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in brackets or anchoring plates for tombstone construction, and has for its object to provide simple and cheap devices of this character that will be capable of holding the head, side and foot stones together in a rigid manner.
To these ends the invention consists in the novel details of construction and combination of parts more fully hereinafter disclosed and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification in which like numerals designate like parts in all the views F igure l is a perspective View of a tomb stone constructed in accordance with our invention. F ig. 2 is a side elevational view of a portion of the head and side stone connected with our improved bracket, and F ig. 3 is a detail perspective view of our improved bracket.
As is well known in tomb stone construction, during the course of time, the different stones get out of plumb, the parts become disarranged and ofttimes on account of the disarrangement the stones become cracked and present a very disorderly appearance. Our .invention however, by the means now disclosed, completely obviates these defects as has been abundantly proved by actual use.
1 indicates the head stone, 2 the side stones and 3 the foot stone, all of which are rigidly connected by means of our improved brackets 4l. These brackets or anchoring` plates are preferably of the shape and construction shown, are adapted to be placed at the union of the head, side and foot stones and comprise the base portions 8, having inwardly or laterally extending strengthening or brace portions 9, upward extending hook portions 10 and channel portions 11, which portions 11 arel provided with the holes 12 for receiving the screws 13 for rigidly connecting the brackets to the head and foot stones. The channel portions 11 are also provided with the extending side portions 14 between which the ends of side stones are adapted to be held.
then the tomb stone is assembled the upward extending hook portions 10 are adapted to interlock with the notches 15, cut in the under portion of the side stones and the inwardly extending portions 9 are adapted to lie on the ground over the grave and, which, together with the base portion, help preventI the side stones from sinking. This connection of the bracket and side stones rigidly hold the side stones against longitudinal movement and also forms a complete union of the head, foot and side stones.
It is obvious that those skilled in the art may vary the details of construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit and scope of our invention and therefore we do not wish to be'limited to the exact features except as may be re quired by the claims.
l/Vhat we claim as new is,-
l. A bracket or anchor plate for tomb stones formed of a single sheet of metal and comprising a base adapted to bear on the ground, a laterally extended strengthening side portion connected to the base and adapted to bear on the ground, an upwardly extending hook portion connected to one end of the base and adapted for interlocking with the bottom of the side stone, and an upwardly extending and perforated channel portion connected to the other end of the base and adapted for embracing the end of the side stone and for connection to the head stone.
2. In tomb stone construction, the combination of head, foot and notched side stones, brackets for securing the stones together, said brackets comprising hase portions adapted to underlie the side stones, lateral inwardly extending portions adapted to overlie the grave, upwardly extending hook n testimony whereof We aiix our signatures 1n presence of tWo Witnesses.
DAVID FELDHAMER. VICTOR LIVINGrSTONJ` portions adapt-ed to fit in the notches of the side stones, upwardly extending and perforated channel portions arranged for receiving the ends of the side stones and screws mounted Within said perforations for connecting the channel portions to the head stone, substantially as described.
