A TTORNEV UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
NELSON T. LITTLE, 0F LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY, ASSIGNOR 0F ONE-HALF T0 WILBUR I-I. WETZEL, OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI.
CAMP-STOVE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 25, 1913.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, NELSON T. LITTLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Louisville, in the county of Jefferson and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Camp- Stoves; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to camp stoves, and more particularly to a stove of a type usually made of sheet metal, and having sides hinged to a top member and adapted for folding thereover to arrange the stove compact-1y for shipping or storing.
It is the object of the present invention to provide a camp stove of this class which is open at both ends to provide a suitable draft and adapt it for the use of long logs, or sticks of fire wood, which may extend entirely through the stove and project from both ends thereof.
It is also an object of the invention to provide the top member of the stove with depending baffle plates for confining heated air within the stove and for serving as individual flues for carrying draft from one end of the stove to the other.
In accomplishing these objects, I have provided the improved details of structure hereinafterdescribed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure I is a perspective view of a camp stove constructed according to my invention. Fig. II is an end view of same. Fig. III is an end view of the stove folded for packing or storing.
Referring more in detail to the parts 1 designates the top member and 2 the side members, all of which are preferably constructed of heavy sheet metal, with sides 2 pivotally connected with the top member by hinges 3. In the preferred arrangement, the side members 2 have acute outwardly angling flanges 4 at their upper ends, and each hinge 3 has one of its straps fixed to a side member at the point of the angle, and the other strap fixed to the under face of the top inwardly of the adjacent longitudinal edge. With this construction, when the stove is supported by the side members,-the latter will extend at an outward angle and be held in such position by the engagement of the flanges 4 with the under side edges of the top, so that the weight of the top, and any weight placed on the stove will tension the sides and serve to hold the stove rigid.
The stove is unobstructed at the front and rear so that sticks of fire wood may be projected entirely therethrough, in this way providing for the use of long sticks, which may be moved into the stove as portions are burned therefrom.
In order to confine the heated air within the stove, and form flues for creating proper draft, I may suspend a number of flue plates 6 from the stove top, and hinge same to the top, so that they may be folded up thereagainst when the stove is to be packed.
In using the device, presuming it is set up as illustrated in Figs. I and II, with the side members spread and the flue plates suspended downwardly into the combustion chamber, the flue plates will assume their functional position automatically, by reason of their weight.
By setting the stove across the wind the fire will be protected from excessive draft, and by turning same so as to take part of the wind a desired draft may be provided.
It is apparent that with a construction comprising merelytop and side members, the side members will automatically fold against the top when the stove is upset, so that it may be quickly made ready for packing when breaking camp; that when not in use it maybe stored or shipped in a limited space, and that it may be erected instantly by merely lifting the top member and allowing the sides to swing into place.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new therein and desire to secure by Letters-Patent is 1. A camp stove comprising a top, hinges fixed to the under side of the top along but inwardly of the longitudinal edges thereof, and side members, each having an acute angling flange at one longitudinal edge thereof, said side members being connected with said hinges to pivot at the points of the angles, whereby the flanges may engage the under face of the top at the outside of the hinges and limit outward projection of said side members.
2. A camp stove comprising a top and side members, flue plates hingedly connected with and extended longitudinally beneath the top member, said plates being adapted to fold against said top member, for the purpose set forth.
3. A camp stove comprising a top member, flue plates hingedly suspended from the top member and adapted to fold thereagainst, and side members hingedly connected with the longitudinal edges of the top member and adapted for supporting same, or for folding over the flue plates When the latter are in folded position.
In testimony whereof I allix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
