JRE'ILAXNING-CLIP FOR CAR-ROOFS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 25A, 1913.
Application filed August 9, 1912.* Serial No. 714,166.
T 0 all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, CLINTON C. MURPHY,
a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, inthe county of Cook and State of Illinois, haveinvented a new and useful Improvementin-Retaining-Clips for Car-Roofs, ofV which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to clips or hood members such as are provide-l to retain the metal rooting sheets of car roots of the. outside type in place.
Ithas for its principal objects to prevent the abrasion and rubbing ott of the galvanizing of the rooting sheets and consequent destruction ot the same, and to attain certain advantages' as will hereinafter more fully appear. The rubbing of the rooting sheets in Contact with the Vmetal retainirg clips or hood castings causes the galvanizing to wear off the sheets so that they. soon rust and rot from the action of the elements and goin holes in the region of the clips or hood castings.
The invention further consists in the parts. and in the arrangements and` combinations of parts hereinafter described and claimed@ In the accompanying drawing ywhichI `forms part of this specification and wherein like symbols refer to like parts wherever they occur,-Figure 1 isa `fragmentary transverse' vertical section of a ear roof adjacent to the eaves, showing a hood casting embodying the invention applied in the region ot ythe seam; Fig. 2 is an end view of the hood casting shown in Fig. l; Fig'. 3 is a perspective view of said hood casting; and Figs. si, 5 and 6 are views illustrating a modification of the hood casting.
In the` drawings, the roof sheets l are turned under adjacent to`the eaves as at 2, so as to coperate with the turned over inner marginal portion of the dashing l whose outer marginal portion is turned down and secured to the sideh ot the ear as at The roof lsheets are provided with the usual rebent interlocking upstanding side seams Referring' now more particularly to the structure shown in Figs. l to 3, inclusive, the
The invention, therefore, consists in pro-- serts 1l of wood, pressed fiber or other suiti able non-abrasive material are fitted. By this arrangement the roofing sheets are prevented lfrom coming in contact with the metal of the hood casting and the rubbing action of the wood or fiber upon the rooting sheets does not destroy the galvanizing las is the case whereA the metal comes in contact with the sheet. Hence, the life of the roofing sheets is prolonged.
The clip shown in Figs. Lito 6, inclusive, is provided with a hood portion 9?, flanges 10a, and fillers 11, which are identical with those ot the device shown in Figs. l to 3, inclusive; but,.instcad ot .having a flat portion 7, it is provided with a downturned portion 12 andN is'adapted to be secured to the side of the car.
Obviously, the non-abrasive'inserts may be placed in any 'position where the roof sheets are liable to rub against the castings. Therefore, I do not wish to be limited to the specific construction and arrangement shown. So, too, it is further obvious that the ordinary retaining clips which are provided at the eaves and ends ot the car at points bel tween the side seams of the roofing sheets ,may be ,likewise provided with these nonabrasive inserts; and, also, that the wear pieces may be secured 'to the clips by means other than that shown.
What l claimis:

2. A. metal securing clip tor roofing sheets,
having a portion arranged to overhang the sheet and provided with a wear piece of non-l abrasive material thereof.
3. A metal securing clip for'rooti'ng sheets having a portion arranged to overhang the sheet and provided withan undercut groove and an ii'isertot non-abrasive material fitted in said undercut groove projecting heyond the tace ot said o L .l hood casting Afor retaining metal projecting beyond the iace j rnanging portion.
