INSERTIBLE INDEX-LEAF.
Specification of Letters 2mm.
Patented Mar. 25, 1913.
Application filed Kay 24, 1912. Serial No. 699,480.
To all whom it may concern This invention relates to improvements in' a leaf to be used as an insert for books containing indexed subject matter, or such matter which it is desired to index, and while it is more particularly intended for, use in directories, such as those used for telephones, yet .it is applicable for use in conneotion with other kinds of books, and it consists in certain peculiarities of the construction, novel arrangement and operation of the parts thereof, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth and specifically claimed.
The principal object of the invention, is to provide a new or improved article of manufacture, that is an index or indicating sheet-upon which may be displayed in any suitable manner, the names, addresses. telephone numbers, or other information relat ing to said names, or information without relation to said names, which sheet maybe readily inserted between the leaves of a bound book, in front of or at the beginning of indexed matter, or such matter which it may be desired to index, and securely retained in such position, in some instances in such a manner that said sheet maybequickly and easily. removed from'the book, and in all cases in such a manner-that the back portion of the book in which the leaf or leaves areinserted, will not be injured or unduly bulged by said insertions.
Other objectsand advantages of the invention will be disclosed in the subjoined description and explanation.
In. order to enable others skilled in the art to which the invention pertains, to make and use the same I will now proceed to describe it referring to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1, is a face view partly in section and partly in elevation of a portion. of a book or directory which may have indexible subject matter, showing an insertible index leaf embodying the invention located between leaves thereof and secured in such position. Fig. 2, is a detached perspective view of an insertible index leaf embodying one form of the invention. Fig. 3, is an enlarged perspective View of one of the corners of said leaf, and-Fig. 4, is a similar view of a modification in the construction of said leaf showing it in position between the leaves of a book or directory.
Like numerals of reference refer .to corresponding parts throughout the diflerent views of the drawing.
The reference numeral 7 designates a portion of the leaves of a book or directory which leaves may be bound together in the ordinary manner and may have printed or otherwise displayed thereon indexed matter, or matter which it may be desired to index. As usual, the leaves 7, of the book are connected at their rear edges to a flexible back 8, and are inclosed between covers 9, one of which covers only, is shown in Figs. 1 and 4, of the drawing. Theportion of the cover in the first nam figure being shown as closed, while that in the last named figure is shown in its open position.
' My new or, improved insertible index sheet is indicated by the numeral 10, and consists of a sheet preferably of substantially the same size as the sheets 7, of the book or directory but having on its front edge a tab or extension 11, which by preference projects beyond the front edges of the sheets 7, and having thereon an index character or letter 12, to indicate the subject matter on the sheets 7 of the book or directory immediately after or following the sheet 10, which subject matter or list of names may begin with a letter or corresponding character to that displayed on the tab 11, of the index sheet.
A t 'its rear edge the sheet 10, has on its upper, and lower portions an extension 13, which projects upwardly and downwardly, respectively, from the upper and lower edges of the sheets 7, as well as from the upper and lower ends of the back 8, of the book. Each of the projections 13, has secured thereon by means of a gromet or eyelet14, or other suitable fastener a reinforcing connection or fastening plate or piece 15, of any suitable material but preferably of strong tough fiber, each of which has its outer portion curved and its portion adjacent to the adjacent edges of the leaves 7, straight as shown at 16, which straight portion of each of the members 15, is located outwardly a slight distance from the edges .so. that they will not interfere with the movement of said leaves in opening or closing the book or in turning said leaves. Secured at one of, its ends around the gromet or fastener 14, on one of the extensions 13, of the sheet 10, and preferably between said extension and the plate or piece 15, thereon, is one end of a flexible connection 17, such as a small cord, which is of greater length than the back 8, of the book and is adapted to be passed between the plate 15, and theextension 13, on the opposite end of the sheet 10, and to be wound around the gromet or fastener 14:, thereof, as is clearly shown in Fig. 1, of the drawing, by which arrangement it isiobvious the sheet 10, will be securely fastened in position between the leaves 7, of the book or between one of the covers 9, and one of the leaves 7, thereif,
and if desired, can be readily detached unfastening the cord 17, at one of its ends from the rear fastening device 14. The sheet 10, may have on one or both of its surfaces at its rear edge adhesive material 18, for use in securing it between the leaves of the book or between one of the covers 9, and said book leaves if desired.
In Fi fl, of the drawing, a modification in the construction of the index leaf 10, is shown, which consists in omitting the extension 13, from the rear corners or upper and lower ends of said leaf, and in securing thereto, inwardly of each of its rear corners, by ineansof a gromet 14, or other suitable fastener, a circular plate or piece 15*, between one of which and the sheet 10, is interposed a flexible connect-ion 17, which is secured at one of its ends to the gromet or fastener 14, between the plate or piece 15, and the sheet 10, and as in the other construction is of greater length than the back 8, of the book or directory and may be passed between the plate or piece 15*, and the sheet 10, at the other rear corner of said sheet and secured around the gromet or Having thus fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent is 1. An improved article of manufacture consisting of a sheet having at two of its corners on the same edge a piece or plate secured thereto at its center, and a flexible connection secured between one of said plates or pieces and the sheet and adapted to be secured near its other end between the other plate or piece and said sheet.
2. An improved article of manufacture consisting of a sheet having an extension at each end of one of its edges, a plate attached between its edges to each of said extensions and having a straight edge presented toward the other plate, and a flexible connection secured at one of its ends to one of said extensions and adapted to be secured near its other end to the other of said extensions.
3. An improved article of manufacture consisting of a sheet having an extension at each end of one of its edges, a plate attached between its edges to each of said extensions and having a straight edge presented toward the other plate, and a flexible connection secured at one of its ends to one of said extensions and adapted to be secured near its other end to the other of said extensions between the same and the plate thereon, said sheet having at its edge provided with said extensions adhesive material.
