Application filed July 15, 1912. Serial No. 709,486.
To all lwhom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES Munro, a citizen of the United States of America, and all resident of Chicago, county of Cook, State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements inl` Valves, of Which the following is a specification.
The main objects of this invention are to provide an improved form of valve or pet 1D cock, the valve member of which is adapted to be normally urged toward itsl closed po sition; to vprovide improved means for holding said valve member in its open position; to provide improved means for causing said valve member to be normally shifted to- Ward its closed position when it is partially moved from its full open position; and to provide-improved means for regulating the cross-sectional area of the passage through said valve.
An illustrative embodiment of this invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a valve constructed according to this invention, the
same being shown with the valve member in its open position. Fig. 2 is .an end elevation of the same. Fi 3 is a plan view of the valve with the va ve member shown in its closed position. Fig. l is a sectional ele` vation taken on the line fil-A of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a sectional view taken on the line B-B of Fig. 3. P
- In the construction shown in the drawings the valve comprises a casing 1 through which extends a small longitudinally disposed passa e 2. A larger bore 3 extends through sai casing in a transverse direction, and intersects with the passage 2, and
has a valve member 4 rotatably mounted therein. At the point of intersection of the bore 3 and passage 2 the bore is reduced so as to form an annular conical shoulder* or `valve seat 5, With which coacts the `annular conical shoulder 6'ion the valve member 4 for securely closing the passage 2 when the valve member is shifted to one limit of its movement, and for opening 'communication through the passage 2 when said valve member is shifted to the opposite limit of its The valve member l extends to the exterior of the casing and has integrally .formed thereon the oppositely .disposed shoulder; 11, which are adapted to-respectively coact 5@ with the ledges 9 and 10 for holding the valve in its open position, and With the inclined surfaces 7 and 8 for shifting the valve member toward its closed positionwhen the shoulders are disengaged from the s@ ledges. vThe valve member l also extends to the exterior of the casing on the opposite side, and has detachably secured thereto a key 19,. A. compression spring 13 embraces the member t between the key 12 and cas 7e ing 2, and normally exerts a pressureon they member el' that Will urge it toward its closed position when the shoulders 11 are in en\ gagement With the surfaces 7 and 8.
A. threaded rod 14 having a linurled head 75 15 is supported in the casing l, so that the reduced portion 16 of the extension pin 17 intersects with the passage 2. This rod may be adjusted for the purpose of regulatin' the cross-sectional area of the passage 2, an so thereby controlling the iiovv of fluid through thevvalve.
The casing 1 is provided With shoulders 18 and 19 located between the inclined surfaces 8 and 9, and having their faces dis- 85 posed at right angles so as to respectively engage opposite sides of. the shoulders 11 for limiting the movement of the valve member i in opposite directions.
The operation cf the device is as followers?,
When it is desired to open the Valvethe member 4 is turned by means of the key l2, which causes the inclined surfaces 7 and 8 to coact with the shoulders 11. and elevate the valve member as it is turned until the e5 shoulders ll rest on the ledges and l0. The elevating of the member s separates 'the annular shoulders 5 and 6, and opens com-v munication through the passage 2. If the' valve member 4i is turned in the reverse di'- l.100,
rection suiiicientlv to causeuthe disengagement of the shoulders 11 l'from the ledges 9 and 10, the inclined surfaces 7 and 8, coacting with the shoulders 11 under pressure of the spring 13, will cause the valve to shift and effect the rengagement of the conical shoulders 5 and` 6, and .thereby shut oil' com munication through the passage 2. lf it is desired to adjust the tloiv of Enid through Ythe passage, therbd 14 may be turned S0110 as to shift the reduced portion 1G. to increase -m- Aer-.vease the cross-sehtional area of the 'passage :2, :is circumstances may require.
lt will thus he seen that. this vslveis adepted vifor use 'where is desired to hure e. 'lull lion ot' lluid when the vulve is opened,'end to insure positive closing 'of the relive when the rotatable vulve ineiiiber is shifted from its iill open position.
)illiough but one specific embodiment of this inicnl'ion has been herein shown und descii" Al, it will be understood het numerous details of theconslruciion shown may be altered or omit l without departing from the spirit of this invention iis-defined b5, the following claims.
claim;
l. fr valve comprising :i longitudinal passage extending therethrough; valve member iiiombly mounted and surface for respectively l'iolding` said member in position for opening seid valve and for shifting member to close seid valve when said memberis moved to'disengage seid shoulder from seid ledge; ende sping embracing the opposite lend of seid member and normally exerting e pressure that-will rcsuse said member to shift toward seid cio'sed position when seid-shoulder is in engagement with seid surface.
l u, casing having e l extending .therethro g mevr-.bly mounted in i casing end extending to the exterior of said casing` on both ,sides thereof, seid member being adapted 'to be moved into and `out o.. position for obstructing said passage for respectively closing and opening seid relire; :iy pair of external inclined surfaces formed on said casing und spaced spart substantially lldegrees seid surfaces terminat-iiigin ledges et their outer ends; e pair of oppositely disposed shoulders formed on one end of said member and adapted to eni gage.- With seid ledges and inclined surfaces for res ectively holdingA seid member-'in position Aor opening said valve and tor shifting seid member to close seid valve 'when seid shoulders are disengaged from said ledges; end ineens normally exerting e pressure on said member that will cause it :i casing having cl3.'y closing end oiening seidv recesso tersection with said passage; .a value meinber moi'ebly mounted in seid bore and eX- t-ending fo the exterior or" said cesing,' said v valve member haringen annuler conical shoulder thereonA adapted to be shifted into and out ot engagemene'with the conical shoulder of said bore for respectively 'closing and opening said valve; a pair of external inclined surfaces 'formed on said casing and spaced spart substantially 180 degrees, and terminating in ledges :it their outer ends; oppositely disposed shoulders 'formed onv seid valve member and adapted to enage With said ledges und inclined surfaces .or respectively holding seid member in osi'tion for opening seid valve undor shifting said member to close sind valve when seid shoulders are disengagedroin Aseid.
ledges; 'and resi-lient ineens normally;r exerting4 e pressure on said member that 1will cause il; to shift to close seid valve when said shoulders ere in engagement- With seid surfaces.
d. A valve comprising a casing having e longitudinal passage extending therethrough; e valvemember in'ovably mounted' in seid casing und ext-ending to the exterior of seid casing on both-sidesthereof, said member being adapted to be moved into and out1 of position 'for obstructing said passage for respectively closing and opening said valve;4v an' external inclined surface formed.
vthai: Will cause said member to shift toward seid-closed position when seid shoulder isin ioc engagement with seid surface; and a rod supported in seid casing and intersecting said passage, and having e reduced portion adjacent to the intersection of seid rod and passage, seid rod being adapted to be 2idj'ustedso as to shift said reduced portion across seid passage and' thereby vary the cross-sectional area of seid passage.
