To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN C. Dnvrr'r, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Elyria, in the county of Lorain and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pipe-Benders, of which I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description,'such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. i
The objects of the invention are to provide a device for bending an elbow in a metal pipe without distorting the walls or i I forced over the forming die to give it the affecting the inside diameter in any direction.
Further objects are to provide'an adjustable device whereby a number of sizes of pipes'can be bent and the arc of the circle of the bend can also be varied.
Further objects are to combine with the bending devices a suitable holding device or holding jaws adapted to retain one end of the pipe while the other is being forcibly bent into shape, and also to provide a reaming tool adapted to give a flaring end to the pipe while exposed in the vise, so that the bent tube can be employed as a conduit for electric Wires, and the wires will enter freely without danger of injury to their insulation or protecting outer coating.
The invention further comprises the combination and arrangement of parts and construction of details as hereinafter described, shown in -the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of the device showing a pipe in position while being bent; Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof, showing the bending formers or dies; Fig. 3 is an end elevation, showing the larger or forming die, dovetailed into the standard, so that it can readily be removed for the substitution of one of a different size; Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the larger fixeddie or former.
In these views, 1 is a bed plate adapted to support the movable parts, 2, 2 are vise jaws adapted to grip and secure one end of a pipe P while it is being shaped by the dies, 3 is a fixed former or die, block upon the outer edge of which is recessed the groove 4, which is shaped to the are of the circle in which the pipe is to be bent. This fixed die is removably secured to the bed plate by means of the dovetail flanges 5. 5 adapted to be inserted in grooves 6, 6 in the and die. Other spaced openings 9 and 10 in the bed plate permit of the insertion of the pm at varying distances fromthe center line of the jaws, sothat other dies of greater size can be inserted when the larger pipes are to be bent or are to be bent in a larger arc of a circle. In this manner the several dies will produce curves of varylng radius according to the shape of the grooves.
The device by means of which thepipe is necessary curvature comprises the roller 11 pivoted on a pin 12 in the hole 15 within the fork 13, which is pivoted at and .swings from the pin 7 which is located at the central'point from whichthe arc of the fixed die is struck. '"In this manner when the fork is swung by its handle 14 the roller 11 will revolve about the fixed die and force the pipe thereon to give it the required shape.
The pivotal pin 7 can be placed within any of the openings 8, '9 and-10 which are the central points of all the circular grooves of various sizes and the roller 11 can be pivoted in any one of the holes 15, 16'0r 17 to accommodate its position to the relative size of any one of the fixed dies. At 20 is shown a pointed or tapered reamer pivoted in a lever 21 and rotatable therein by means of the crank 22, so as to counter sink or flare the inner edge of the pipe at 23. To give variability to the position of the reamer to accommodate it to the size of the pipe, so that it can be centered therein,'the lever 21 is loosely connected with thebed plate by means of the spring 24 by means of which also elastic pressure upon the reamer can be obtained.
Having described the invention what I claim as new and desire-to secure by Letters Patent is I 1. In a pipe bending device, the combination with a bed plate, of a vise thereon, a removable die block therein, having a. curved groove in its outer edge corresponding to the desired arc of the pipe elbow, a central opening in said block within said are, a pin therethrough, and a fork pivoted upon said pin, a roller pivoted in'said fork, adapted to engage the outer side of said pipe, a pivot pin for said roller, said fork provided with spaced openings in which said roller pivot is alternately insertible, said bed plate provided with corresponding pivotal openings for the pivot pin of said fork.
2. In combination, in a pipe bending device, a bed plate, a vise thereon adapted to hold said pipe while'it is being bent, a die block provided with a groove on its outer'edge curved in an arc of a circle, said block provided with dovetail flanges on its inner edge and said bed plate provided with corresponding dovetail recesses, a forked lever and a pivot pin therefor in said fixed die block, centrally located in said arc, and a roller pivoted in said fork, said roller adapted to revolve about said fixed die block when said lever is swung about said pin therein.
3. In a pipe elbow making device a bed plate detachable die blocks. adapted to be alternately secured thereon, said-die blocks having grooveson their outer faces, curved to the desired arc of the elbow, each die block provided with an openingicentrally located in said are, and said bed plate provided with spaced openings corresponding in position to the said openings in said die blocks when placed in their several positions, a pivot pin adapted to be inserted in said openings in said die blocks and bed plate, a lever pivoted on said pin, a roller pivoted in said lever, and a vise in said bed plate adapted to hold pipe-while said elbow is being made therein.
