Description
(I. N. MARQUETTE.
UAR STEP.
APPLICATION FILED 0012.4, 1912.
.1 56,745. Patented Mar. 18', 1913 llV/TNESSESf INVENTOR Q. My BY ATTORNEY a citizen of the United States, residing at JEROME 1v. MARQUETTE, or BINeHAMroN, new roan.
CAR-STEP.
To all whom, it mag concern Be it known that I, JEROME N. MARQUETTE,
' Binghamton, in the county of Brooms and State of NewYork, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car-Steps, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to car steps for railroad passenger and Puilman cars, in which an auxiliary safety step is removably hung from, the lower stationary step of the car.
One of the objects of my invention is to provide-an additional auxiliary step that is readily moved out of the way when not in.
use.
Another object is to provide a step that is simple, safe, and secure and one that occupies a small space when not in use.
With these objects in View my invention consists in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a sectional side view taken on the line 1. 1 of Fig.2. Fig. 2 is a front view of my device. Fig. 3 is a sectional side view of'my device with the third step folded back upon the stationary step, and
Fig. 4 is a detail sectional side view of my" device taken on the line 4. t of Fig. 2.
The same reference characters denote like p in each of the several figures of the drawing.
In carrying-out my invention I provide guides A and A having the inclined slots 0 and O and from either end of said guides are the semi-circular project-ions B and B.
Said guide A has extending from each of the end projections the base projection C, firmly bolted to the respective stationary car steps E and F by bolts and nuts, 2. 2.- Mounted on guide i I have the sliding hangers b and b composed of the side pieces 3. 5 and 3'. 5 connected by the bridges 4 and 4. The side projections 3 and 3 having extended from them the hanger legs 6 and (V to the bases of which the third step D is attached, and between said hanger legs and step extends the braces 9 and 9'. Projecting from the outer side of b and b are the lugs 7. 7 and 7. 7. The side pieces 5 and 5 when in hanging position slide down between the lugs 7. 7 and 7 7. Between said side pieces 3. 5 and 3'. 5' extends the guide pins 8 and 8", which pass through the slots Specification of Letters Patent.

0 and 0' respectively, thus controlling and guiding the hanger in its position when in use or controlling its position when not in use or while being moved out of the way.
In operation when the third step is down in operative position and it is desired to move it out of the way, I raise-the removable step D upward pulling it toward me, thus causing the bolts 8 and 8v to move upward in slots 0 and O, and then whenout of the perpendicular section of the said slots 0 and O, I push backward on said step which causes the bolts 8 and 8 and hangers b and b to move up the inclined slot, then through the horizontal portion of said slots 9 and O, to again drop into place in the upper perpendicular section of said slots 0 and O", as shown in Fig. When I wish to again .use the step 'I lift up on said step D, raising the projecting ends or hangers b and I) Thus curved angles and hence no projections exist to catch clothing or interfere with-the progress of persons up and down said steps.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and for which I desire Letters Patent is as-follows:
1. In combination with a stationary step, an auxiliary movable step, guides for said movablestep attached to said stationary step and mou ted upon the top surface thereof and provided with downwardly projecting extensions .at their upper ends, and hangers for-said movable step slidable in said guides and into said extensions, whereby said auxiliary step may be moved from a position below the lowermost step to a positionon top of said lowermost ste and can be locked in position on said step by the downwardly projecting extensions.
. 2. Thecombination with the stationary steps of a car of an auxiliary movable step, hangers for said auxiliary step, guides for the hangers, said guides being mounted upon the top surface of the stationary steps and slotted to receive said hangers whereby the auxiliary step may be moved from a position below the lowermost stationarystep to a position on top of said lowermost step.
from a posltion below the lowermost station- I ary step to a position on top of the down- Ward stationary step.
4. The combination with the stationary steps of a car of guides each comprising two base members joined by an inclined portion one of said base members being mounted upon the top surface of the lowermost stationary step of the car and the other of said base members being mounted upon the top surface of the next higher stationary step; said base members and. inclined portion being provided with slots in which are slidably mounted hangers carrying an auxiliary step, the slot in the lowermost base members serving to support the auxiliary step in operative position below the lowermost stationary step and when positioned in the slot in the uppermost base members serving to position said auxiliary step on top. of the lowermost stationary step in inoperative position. v a
In testimony whereof I have aflixed my signature in presence .of two witnesses.
JEROME N. MARQUETTE. I Witnesses:
