EXTENSION CAR-STEP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 20, 1907.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Janns H. CAMERON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Paris, in the county of Lamar and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Extension Oar-Steps; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in extension car steps.
The object of the invention is to provide a step of this character adapted to be applied to the platform or to the lower stationary step of a car to provide a temporary extension step for the car which may be readily folded and pushed back to an out of the 'way position beneath the platform or lower step.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of a portion of a car platform showing the parts in operative position; Fig. 2 is a similar view with the parts folded or in an inoperative position; and Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of the device with the parts in the position shown in Fig. 1.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 denotes the platform or step of a car on the under side of which is secured a supporting frame 2 consisting of a pair of longitudinally-disposed side bars 3 which are connected at their inner ends by a cross-bar 4.
Secured to the lower edges of the side and cross-bars 3 and 4 is a bottom plate 5 in which is formed. parallel longitudinally-disposed slots 6.
Slidably mounted upon the bottom plate 5 between the side bars 3 is a folding step 7 consisting of a supporting plate 8 which when the step is in an operative position forms the back or riser of the step.
On the lower side of the back or supporting plate 8 is formed opposite longitudinally-disposed hooks 9 which are adapted to engage the slots 6 in the bottom plate 5 when the step is in an inoperative position and which when the step is lowered or in an operative position are adapted to hook over and to engage the cross bars 10 which form the forward ends of the slots 6 as shown, the step when in an operative position being suspended from said cross-bars by means of the hooks 9, as clearly shown in Fig. 2 ol' the drawings.
Secured to the lower end of the plate 8 is a stop plate 12 which when the step is in an inoperative position forms a front cover plate for the end of the frame 2 and which when the step is in a lowered or operative position is adapted to form a stop and support for the tread plate 13 of the step which is hingedly connected with the lower end of the supporting plate 8 and is adapted when not in use to fold upwardly and inwardly against said supporting plate so that when the latter is turned upwardly and pushed back in the frame 2, said step will also be moved therewith to an out-of-the-way position. The tread plate 13 of the step may if desired be provided with an elastic or rubber tread surface 14.
Secured to the under side of the supporting frame 2 are downwardly projecting longitudinally disposed stop bars 15, the outer ends of which are in the sameplane with the outer ends of the frame 2 whereby when the supplemental step is drawn outwardly and lowered to an operative position, the plate 8 will bear against the ends of the stop bars 15 and thereby be prevented from swinging or being forced rearwardly. The stop plate 12 is provided on its outer side with a handle 16 by means of which the same together with the other parts of the supplemental step may be drawn out of the frame 2 and lowered to an operative position. 7 5
A supplemental or extension step for cars as herein shown and described will be simple, strong and durable in construction, eflieient and reliable in operation and may readily be pulled out and unfolded to a position for use and which when folded and pushed back to an inoperative position will be out of the way and out of sight beneath the car step or platform.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is:-
1. A step of the character described, comprising a supporting frame adapted to be secured beneath the platform or step of a car, a supporting plate slidably connected with said frame, a tread portion hingedly connected to the lower ends of said supporting plate, supporting hooks on the upper end of said plate whereby the same is engaged with said frame when in an operative position, and means to hold said tread portion in a lowered or operative position, substantially as described.
A step of the character described comprising a supporting frame adapted to be secured to the under side of a car step or platform, a supporting plate slidably mounted in said frame, means to hingedly connect said plate with the supporting frame when in a lowered or operative position, a tread portion hingedly connected to the lower end of said supporting plate and adapted to be folded inwardly 100 against the same and a stop plate secured to the lower end of said supporting plate to form a stop for the tread portion when in an operative position and to close the end of the supporting frame when the step is in an inoperative po sition, substantially as described.
3. A car step of the character described comprising a supporting frame adapted to be secured to the under side of a car platform or step, a longitudinally-slotted bottom plate secured to said frame, a supporting plate slidably mounted in said frame and adapted to form the riser of the 110 step supporting hooks mounted on the inner side of said supporting plate. said hooks being adapted to engage with the slots in the bottom plate of the supporting frame and to hingedly engage the end cross-bars of said slot whenthe step is in an operative position, a tread portion hingedly 115 connected to the lower end of the plate and a stop plate secured to the lower end of the supporting plate beneath said tread portion to form a support for the latter, substantially as described.
4. An extension car step comprising a frame adapted to be secured to the under side of a car platform or step, a longitudinally-slotted bottom plate on said frame, stop bars secured to and projecting downwardly from said bottom plate, a supporting plate adapted to be slidably engaged with said frame. supporting hooks on the under side of said plate adapted to be slidably engaged with slots in the bottom plate of the frame and to hook over the end bars of said slots when the extension step is lowered to an operative position, a tread portion hingedly mounted on the lower end of said supporting plate, a stop plate secured to said supporting plate beneath said tread portion to form a stop and support for the latter when in an operative position and to form a closure for the end of the supporting frame when the step is in a folded position and a handle on said stop plate by means of which the step is drawn out and pushed back in'the supporting frame substantially as described.
