Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANCIS OSCAR Know,
a subject of the Emperor of Germany, residthose moldings or headings employed in the construction of motor bodies and carriages and in the method of producing same. In some instances flush headed screws are screwed in the metal molding, plate or other article, after same has been drilled and countersunk and before the motor body is painted, and the recesses above the heads of the screws are filled up with some stopping.
This stopping or filling however becomes loose after a short time and spoils the look of the carriage considerably.
Now the object of this invention is to overcome this inconvenience and'to produce a molding, plate, or other device which when screwed or nailed to the body can be made without recesses and to have one complete surface which may be kept polished or painted as desired.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawin whereof Figures 1,2 an 3 are longitudinal sectional views showing the various steps in the formation of the openings for the headed fastening devices; Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional view, partly in elevation, showing the final steps employed after the introduction of the fastening devices through the aforesaid holes.
For the purpose of my invention and as illustrated in the annexed drawings holes A are punched in the metal molding from the inside surface in such a way that a bur B, Fig. 1, is produced on the other side, after which the burs B are opened out as at Fig. 2
to the desired extent by means of a suitable punch or blunt drilling tool. The holes are then countersunk as indicated by the reference character 0, Fig. 3, to receive the head of a screw, nail or pin, the burs B being left standing.
The countersunkholes are of such depth in the metal that the head of the screw, nail, or pin will lie below the surface of the metal and leave sufficient room for the bur to be hammered into the recess and become flush with the surface of the metal.
When the metal article is placed in position the screws are firmly screwed through the molding into the wood and the upstanding burs are hammered over the screw heads and the surfaces made flush with the metal. This method renders the use of separate plugs or fillers superfluous.
What I do claim as my inventionand desire to secure by Letters Patent is A method of constructing ductile metal articles for attachment to wooden and other bodies, which consists in punching holes in the article from the inner surface thereof to produce an upstanding bur upon the outer surface of the article opposite each hole, openup the burs, and shaping the walls ofeach e to receive and hold a headed fastening device, with the head of such device'below the outer surface of the article,whereby after the' fastening devices have been inserted through said holes into the body to which the article is to be attached, the metal forming each bur may be hammered into the space between the head of the fastening device therein and the outer surface of the article directly against said head and flush with the outer surface.
