' Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed June 1, 1912.
Patented Mar. 18, 1913.
Serial. No. '700,977'.
To ad fr0/wm t may concern:
Be it known that I, DEwiR'r N. JACOBS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Elkton, in the county of Brookings and State of South Dakota, have invented new and useful Improvements in Brooms, of which the following is a specication.
An object of the invention is to provide a broom of simple and durable construction.
The invention embodies, among other fea-v tures, a plurality of securing frames arranged to secure a broom body thereto and adapted to receive a handle with means for retaining the handle in rigid engagement with the mentioned frames.
In the further disclosure of the invention reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, constituting a part of this application, in which similar characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the cornpleted broom; Fig. 2 is an edge view; Fig. 3 is a side elevation looking at the inner side of one of the frames; Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 4 4 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 5 is a horizontal transverse sectional view on the line 5-5 of Fig. 2.
Referring more particularly to the views, use is made of a. plurality of securing frames 10, each embodying a shank 11 and a head 12, the shank 11 being formed by bending an integral piece of wire in a U-shape form, the ends of the wire being then bent outwardly in opposite directions and then bent laterally downward, the wire when bent as mentioned being fork shaped. A plate 13 is now secured to the head 12 of each of the securing frames 10 to form parts thereof, the edges of the plate being bent around the fork shaped end of each'frame, the mentioned plates being provided with apertures 14, as disclosed in Fig. 3. A broom body 15, consisting of a series of vegetable fibers 16 forming suitable broom material, is now mounted on the heads 12 of the frames 10, the ends 17 of the vegetable bers being arranged between the heads 12, with the memtioned fibers bent outwardly and around the upper ends of the heads and then bent so that the ends 18 of the fibers will depend from the securing frames. The frames l() are now secured by passing wires 19 through the apertures 14 of the plates 13 and intertwining the wires between the ends 17 of the vegetable fibers 16, composing the broom body 15, the mentioned plates 13 being preferably secured at the four corners and near the upper central parts thereof. The depending ends 18 of the broom body 15 are now brought .together beneath the heads 12 and secured with suitable twine or wire 20, thus completing the broom body 15. The upper ends of the shanks 11 are bent outwardly in opposite directions to form flanges 21, and a handle 22 is arranged between the shanks 11 with the lower end of the handle disposed immediately above the broom body 15. A plurality of retaining plates23 are now mounted to encircle the handle 22 and the shanks 11 below the flanges 21, the ends of the plates 23 being bent around the Shanks 11 and having their edges arranged in the position shown, after which staples 24 are driven through the adjacent edges of the plates, to extend into the broom handle 22, thus completing the broom.
It will be readily seen that when the broom body becomes unfit for use, a new broom body can be mounted upon the heads 12 of the securing frames 10, the wires 19 and twine 2O being first severed, after which the plates 23 are removed from engagement with the shanks 11 and handle 22, thus permitting of separating the securing frames for the purpose of inserting the new vegetable fibers constituting the broom body.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
In a broom, the combination with a handle, of frames disposed on opposite sides of the handle, oppositely disposed tufts of broom material passing over the outer faces of the frames and looped down between the frames, the said tufts being secured together below the frames, means passing through the frames and through the broom material between them, to draw the frames on the looped portions of the broom material, and means for securing the frames to the handle.
In testimony whereof I afx my signature in presence of two witnesses.
