COMBINATION-PADLOCK;
I To all whom, it may concern:
'ative position, the boltoperating'member maybe moved to withdraw the bolt from ingagement with the shackle or other memith the above and other objects in view, this invention consists of the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, all as hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein,
Figure 1 is a rear elevation of the lock closed, with one section of-the casing removed to more clearly disclose the construction of the several parts, Fig. 2 is a similar view, the lock being open. Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is an elevation of one sec-tion of the casing. Fig. 5 is a perspective view'of thebolt operating member. Fig. 6 is a perspec-- tive. view of thelocking member and the permutation ring or collar carried therebyI Throughout the following detail description and on the several figures of the drawings, similar parts are referred to by like reference characters. I
In carrying out the present invention, a
.. casing 1 is provided which is preferably constructed of twosections, each of which is provided with an annular recess 2 and also a larger recess 3, the purpose of which will be hereinafter disclosed. Each section is provided with a pair of ears 4 and 4', the ears 4.v having pivoted therebetween one end of the shackle 5, while the hook end of the shackle is adapted to be guided between said ears 4' into the opening 6 in the casing.
bolt 7 is slidably mounted in the recess 3 and is adapted to move. in an arcuate path into engagement with the hook end of the shackle 5 for locking the latter from move- Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Man 18, 1913.
Application filed December 11, 1911. Serial No. 665,058.
ment. The inner surface of the bolt 7 is provided with the teeth 8 which mesh with the teeth 9 carried by the bolt operating member 10 rotatably mounted within the casing 1. This member 10 is mounted onthe shaft 11 which latter is actuated by a thumb wheel 12.
Formed on the peripheral edge of the member 10 and remote from'the teeth 9 are a plurality of stops 13 which are properly spaced to receive therebetween the locking pins or members 14, the latter being provided with recesses 15 and rotatable by the thumb pieces or wheels 16. The walls of the casing on each side of the recess 2 are provided with transverse grooves, as at 17, to form the bearings for the locking pins 14. so that the latter may be easily rotated to bring the recesses 15 into alinement with the stops 13 to receive the latter on movement ofthe bolt operating member 10 or rotate the recesses out of alinement whereby any movement of said member 10 is prevented. Each locking pin 14 is provided with asquare shouldered portion 18 on which is mutation rings or collars 19. It will be ob-- vious that'the'shouldered portion 18 abuts against the sides of the annular recess 2 and prevents the pin from displacement from the casing of the lock. Said-shouldered portion also performs another function, in
that it locks the permutation collar 19 upon the pin when in its normal position in the annular recess, as well as connects the pin and collar for. rotation on the latter, by means of the wheels 16. By having these permutation members 19 adjustably mounted,difl'erent combinations may be obtained if it is so desired.
From the foregoing, it will be observed that when the pins 14 are rotated to bring the recesses 15 in alinement with the stops 13, the bolt operating member 10.may be rotated to withdraw the bolt from engage ment" with the shackle,5. Upon reversing 'the movement of the member 10, the bolt is again engaged in the hook terminal of the shackle 5 after which the locking pins 14 are rotated, thereby locking said member 10 .detachably and adjustably mounted the perlift) from movement. Of course, it is understood that it is not necessary that; all the locking pins should be rotated to lock the member 10 from movement, as the moving of any one lockingpin whereby the recess 15 is moved from alinement with the stop 13 will be sufiicient to prevent movement of the member 10 and opening the lock.
Having thus fully described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1 In combination, a casing comprising sections, each section having an arcnatewecess therein adapted to register with the recess of the other section when the sections are assembled, a shackle, a locking bolt adapted to engage the shackle, means for operating the bolt, stops carried by the bolt operating means, a plurality of rotatable locking pins disposed radially in the casing and extending across the arcuate recesses in the secreceive the stops when the grooves are in alinementwith the stops.
In testimony whereof we aflix our signatures 1n presence of two wltnesses.
