UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY E. WOOD, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO THE COLOROLL MANUFAC- TURING COMPANY, OF ORANGE. NEW JERSEY, A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
EXPANDING CORE on ARBOR.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY Voon, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Newark, county of Essex, and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Expanding Cores or Arbors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to improvements in expanding cores or arbors.
It is the special object of my invention to provide an expansible core. arbor or shaft. of that class which, while being composed of several parts will, when in position with the object to be driven, answer the same purpose as-the solid driving shaft.
A further object of this invention is to provide an expansible core or shaft that may readily be inserted into a hollow cylinder, object or work piece in such a manner that the entire body so formed may be mounted' in bearings or centers to be rotated for accomplishing the work intended to be done. The novel expansible core or shaft may also be applied to a printing roll and tightened therein very firmly which may be done very quickly and easily. Furthermore the novel expansible core when inserted into a hollow shell, mass, or object compensates any or all irregularities in the diameter of the interior of same up to its space limit when other than the standard size of such hollow objects are to be employed. Removable journals or bearings are provided on the novel expansible core so that same may easily be renewed when worn out or readily exchanged when it is desired to run the roll placed thereon in another. machine having bearings of a different size or under other Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed December 1910. 1 Serial No. 599,374.
tio nal View an expansible core, arbor or shaft which embodies in desirable form the present improvements. Fig. 2 is .an end view of same. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line 3 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a like sectional view on line 4-4 of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a section on line 5-5 of Fig. 6 and Fig. 6 illustrates a modification of the device with other means for expanding the core.
Similar characters of reference denote like parts in all the figures.
Referring to thevdrawings H represents a tube which forms the base part of the device. Two heads I are inserted. one at each end of said tube H; these may be firmly secured therein in any suitable manner by means of screws, pins or rivets. A journal plug J with threaded shank fits into each head I and is locked therein in any convenient manner to insure said plugs against working loose while the roll is in motion. The guide rings G are provided on the tube H and firmly secured either, by shrinking them thereon, or brazing, soldering or pinning them thereto. The adjusting head L shown to the right in Fig. 1 is secured to the shaft as shown and locked as to its lat eral position by means of the collar K which in turn is secured to the tube H by means of the screws M. This arrangement permits the adjusting head L to rotate freely on the tube H which however does not change its position laterally. The adjusting head-L has an interior portion L which is threaded on the out-side as shown in Fig. 1. Four adjusting barsF are provided on the rings G and held in position by means of the grooves which are indicated at t in Figs. 1 and 3. The adjusting bars F have slanting portions F and the front enlarged slanting portion F is interiorly threaded and engages the threaded portion L of the adjusting head L, as shown in Fig. 1. Four shell pieces E are placed onto the adjusting bars F and secured by means of screw bolts P provided with retaining springs Q, the threaded portionv of the screw bolts P extending through the rings G into the tube H. These four shell pieces E haveeach a number of inwardly extending portions E with slanting surfaces in reverse order to the slanting surfaces of the enlarged porion tions 1 of the bars F. The slanting portions E of the shell parts E- rest on the slanting enlarged portions F of the adjusting bars F and both slide on each other when the core is expanded or contracted. To prevent the shells I) from moving laterally the adjusting head L is provided with a shoulder V on its circumference. The adjusting head L has a number of pin holes I: circularly arranged as shown in Fig. 2 into which fit the pins of a suitable tool or spanner wrench whereby the adjusting head L may be rotated.
The novel expansible core or shaft is adjusted in substantially the following manner: \Vhen the pins of the tool are inserted into the holes U of the adjusting head and same isturned then the threaded portion L of the head L, meshing with the interior threaded portion of F of'the adjusting bars I will move said bars F horizontally in and out according to the direction in which the head L is rotated. When the adjusting bars 1 move toward the left the enlarged portions F with their slanting surface will move on the slanting surfaces E of the shells E and thereby expand the core. By reversing the movement of the head L the adjusting bars will more to the right and the core will be contracted.
As above stated the journal plugs J are removable by means of their threaded shanks and other journal plugs of larger or smaller diameter may be inserted when the roll, cylinder or other hollow' object on the expansible core shall be mounted in another machine having hearings of a different size.
Tn Figs. 5 and 6 of the drawings a modified form of expansible core or shaft is shown. The tube H, the rings G, the journal plugs J, and the adjusting head L with its shoulder'V, are substantially the-same as in the abovev described construction. The head L and the bars F are threaded as above described. However the adjusting bars F are provided each with a link bar N and the shell E have interior portions in which turns the head of a link bar N. It is self evident that by rotating the adjusting head L the shells are expanded and contracted by means of the threaded portion of the head L and said bars F. The shells are made in sections of a different length and in order to connect them the screw bolts'R are arranged as shown in Figs. 5 and 6 for the purpose of connecting two neighboring sections of a shell. Thus I do not limit myself to the details of construction'and other changes may be made therein within reasonable limits without departing from the spirit of this invention.
I claim as my invention:
