As here showmmy improved machine tool comprises a cylindrical casing'"1,"the forward portion of which is formed withaseries of elongated radial slots 3. Mounted in these slots to slide radially in the casing are reamer bars or cutting members 4 having cutting edges 5 formed thereon. Adjacent the forward end of the casing the slots 3 extend only partially through the wall of the casing in a radial direction but entirely through in a longitudinal direction, as indicated at 3, while the reamer 0r cutter bars have theirouter portions, -'-on which a are formed the outting edges 5longer than their inner portions and extending through the forward ends or the slots *3 substantially flush-with the forward en d of the ca'si ngt- 1. This arrangement permits the 1 toel to he fused to reamfoutan opening to the-bottom wall thereof.

As will be clearly apparent from Fig. 2 of the drawing, an inwardly facing transverse wall is formed adjacent the forward end of the casing. by the plug 10, this wall engaging the forward ends of the inner portions 7 of the cutter bars 4 to prevent forward displacement thereof while the outer portions project forwardly over this wall 10 to the desired point to enable the same to cut to the bottom of a hole.
The means which I have shown for moving the adjusting member 9 longitudinally in the casing 1 comprises a screw 15 threaded into the left hand end of the adjusting member 9 which extends rearwardly of the cutting bars the screw 15 being held against longitudinal movement by any suitable means, as'the pin 16 engaging an annular groove 17 in the screw. The screw 15 may also have a flange 18 thereon which bears against a shoulder 19 on the casing to take the end thrust. I have here shown a squared head 20 at the rear end of the casing 1, while the screw 15 may have a square socket 21 formed therein for insertion of a key to rotate the screw 15. It will be noted that the engagement of the reamer bars i in the slots 8 prevents rotation of the adjusting member 9.
The method of use of my improved tool will be apparent from the above description but it may be added that when the tool is to be used on a boring which may have a smaller diameter at the point of insertion of the reamer than at the point where the cutting bars are to work the reamer is inserted in the opening and the bars expanded after inserting, before mounting the reamer in the chuck of the lathe or other machine. Similarly, to remove the reamer the chuck is removed and the reamer bars contracted to permit the tool to be withdrawn through the smaller opening.
In contracting the bars 4, the dove-tailed portions 7 engaged in the corresponding slots 8 in the adjusting member 9 operate positively to draw the bars inwardly. This feature is important in devices of this nature, as it is necessary for the bars 4 to fitsnugly in the slots.
It will be apparent that various changes and modifications might be made in the construction as illustrated without departing from the scope of the appended claims.
V] hat I claim is:
1. A machine tool comprising a cylindrical casing having a plurality of radial slots therein, cutter bars positioned in said slots, and an adjusting member fitting snugly within the cylindrical casing and adapted to engage the inner portions of said cutter bars to adjust the position of the same radially in said slots, the said casing presenting an inwardly facing transverse wall adjacent its forward end adapted to engage the inner portions of the forward ends of the cutter bars to prevent forward displacement of the latter said cutter bars having their outer portions projecting forwardly beyond the said inner portions over the said transverse wall.
2. A machine toolcomprising a cylindrical casing having a plurality of radial slots therein extending longitudinally through to the forward end of the casing, said slots extending only partially through the casing in a radial direction adjacent the forward end thereof, cutter bars positioned in said slots, said cutter bars having their outer portions extending forwardly beyond their inner portions through the last mentioned portions of the said slots, and an adjusting member fitting snugly within said casing and slidable therein and adapted to engage the inner faces of the cutter bars to adjust the latter radially in the said slots.
3. A machine tool comprising acylindrical casing having a plurality of radial slots therein, cutter bars positioned in said slots, and means adapted to engage the inner portions of said cutter bars to adjust the position of the same radially in said slots, said cutter bars having their cutting portions longer than said inner portions and extend ing outwardly substantially flush with the forward end of the casing.
