ATTACHMENT FOR CYLINDER PRINTING-PRESSES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed August 13, 1912.
Patented Mar. 18, 1-913.
Serial No. 714,886.
To all whom it may concern:
Be itli'l'lOVVIl that I, PETER S. NIELSEN, a citizen of the United States,residin-g at Valley City, in the county of Barnes, State of North Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Cylinder Printing-Presses; and I do hereby declare the following to'be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it, appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to attachments for cylinder printing presses.
The object of the invention resides inthe provision of an attachment which may be readily associated with a printing press of the type named and when so associated will eifectively prevent the printed surface of relatively thick and stiff material from becoming smeared as the result of rubbing against the under side of the feed board of.
the press. I
With the above and other objects 1n view, the invention consists in the detalls of construction and in the arrangement and com-' bination of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in theappended claims.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters of refer ence denote corresponding parts in the several views, and in which- Figure 1 is a side view of a fragment of the feed boardand cylinder of a printing press showing the attachment applied, Flg. 2, a plan view of what is shown in Fig. 1, Fig. 3, a plan view of the attachment removed, and Fig. 4, a side View of the attachment removed.
'Referring to the drawings A indicates the feed board of a printing press and B the cylinder thereof. The feed board A is provided on its under side with a transverse rail 10 which is adapted to support the attachment as will hereinafter appear.
The attachment is shown as comprising a body 11 which is provided with a recess 12 conforming in shape to the cross section of the rail 10 whereby said body may be' slidably mounted upon the rail. A set screw 13 is mounted in the body 11 and is adapted to impinge upon the rail 10 when the latter is disposed in the recess 12 so as-to lock the body against movement longitudinally. of
said rail. has formed thereon adjacent its forward end spaced ears 1 1 between which is rotatably mounted a roller 15 so disposed as to hold the work close to the cylinder as said work passes the roller. The'forward end ofthe body 11 terminates in a pair of upwardly directed arms 16 each provided with a curved slot 17 Pivoted to thebody 11 and movable between the arms16 is an arm 18 which carries a screw 19 engaged through the slot 17 and having a thumb nut 20 threaded thereon whereby the arm 18 may be locked in any desired adjustment against The lower side of the body 11- movement on its pivot. It will of course be to engage'the paper carried by the cylinder of the press simultaneously with the engagement of said paper by the rollers 21 and 15.
In use the attachment is mounted upon the rail 10 at each side of the press and the arms 18 of each attachment adjusted so as to properly confine the work between the cylinder B, roller 21 and the point 18 of said arm. During the operation of the press the rollers 15'and 21 of the attachment and the point 18 of the arm 18 will serve to hold the edges of the paper to the cylinder when same passes beneath the feed board after being printed. In this manner all possibility of the printing being smeared by contact of the paper with the under side of the feed board is obviated.
What is claimed is:
1. An attachment for cylinder printing presses consisting of a body provided with means for securing same to the feed board of a press for adjustment transversely of the latter, a roller journaled on said body for confining the work between same and the periphery of the cylinder, an arm pivoted to the body and extending forwardly of the latter and adapted for adjustment toward and away from the cylinder, means for sework between same and the cylinder at a point forward of the first named roller.
2. An attachment for cylinder printing presses consisting of a body provided with -means for securing same to the feed board of a press for adjustment transversely of the latter, a roller journaled on said body for confining the work between same and the periphery of a cylinder, an extension on the forward end of the body terminating in an upturned portion provided with a slot,
an arm pivoted to the body and movable adjustment across the upturned portion and adapted for mard of the first named roller.
In testimony whereof, I atfix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
PETER S. NIELSEN.
Witnesses:
JAMES W. NIELSON,
