b all whom it may concern Be it known that I, J OHAN GooHI a subjectof the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, residing at Passaic, in the county of Passaic and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in VVire- Reel's, of which the following is a specifica tion.
This invention relates to devices upon which wire may be reeled and upon which wire may be supported, and has for-one of its objects to provide a simply constructed device of this character of increased efficiency and utility.
Another object of the invention is to provide a simply constructed device of this character which will be automatically adjusted to fit reels of various sizes.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character in which means are provided for preventing the accidental displacement of the reels.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction as hereinafter shown and described and then specifically pointed out in the claims; and, in the drawings illustrative of the preferred embodiment of the invention, Figure 1 is a. side elevation of the improved device; Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same; Fig. 3 is a plan view in section on the line 33 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is an'enlarged sectional detail of one of the arm adjusting devices; Fig. 5 is a sectional detail of the upper or head members; Fig. 6 is a perspective view of one of the spring devices, detached; and Fig. 7 is an enlarged detail, illustrating a modification in the construction.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the accompanying drawings by the same reference characters. I The improved device comprises a supporting foot or base 10 having a standard 11 rising therefrom. The base and standard may be of any required size, but the base will be of sufficient area to firmly support the su erstructure and the standard will be of su cient length to elevate the superstructure to the required distance above the floor, and may be varied in length as circumstances may require.

Each of the members 12 is provided with 'a longitudinal groove 13 in the upper face at each side of the center, the grooves being preferably dovetailed, and each groove designed to receive a block 14 which is slidable in the groove, each block being provided with a socket through which a pin 15 extends. An upper frame also forms a part of the improved. device and comprises two bars 16 arranged at right angles to each other and each with a socket 17 in its ends. Pivoted at 18 in each of the sockets 17 is an arm 19, the arms being arranged to swing upon the top frame.

At their lower ends the arms 19 enter the I sockets of the blocks 14 and pivotally engage the pins 15.
The standard 11 is preferably tubular, preferably formed of a piece of gas piping, and slidable within the tubular standard is a rod 24 which extends up through perforations in the lower cross members 12 at their crossing points and likewise extends through an aperture through the upper frame member 16 at their crossing points. Projecting inwardly from each of the bars 19 is a perforated pin 20, and fitting between the bars and-bearing over the pins by perforations in their lower ends, are two spring members 21 which cross each other at right angles and are perforated at their crossing points to receive the rod 24. Locking pins 22 are passed through the apertures of the pins 20, to lock the spring members in position. The springs are an ranged to produce an outward force, as hereafter explained. By this simple arrangement it will be obvious that the arms 19 aremoved outwardly to adapt them to the size of the coil of wire and the blocks 14 will move outwardly in the grooves 13 when the pressure is. thus imparted. By this means the reel frame is automatically maintained at its greatest diameter when empty bv the action of the springs, and when a Pivoted at 26 to each of the bars 19 is a latch 27 having a spring 28 connected be tween its shorter end and the arm and operating to maintain the latch yieldably in distended position. The latches operate to hold the reel of wire in position upon the bars and prevent accidental displacement, while at the same time yieldable when force is applied to enable the reel or wire to be applied to the reel or detached, therefrom. It will be obvious that the spring 28 operates to hold the latch 27 from movement iii either direction, moving the latch in one direction distending the spring and moving .the latch in the opposite direction compressing the spring. Thus the catches ofi'er resistance to the removal of the coil under normal conditions, but will yield when a suflicient pressure is applied, and the same action results when the coil is placed upon the reel. Arranging thecatches 27 therefore so that they are yieldably supported from movement in either direction, is an important feature of applicants device and materially increases its efiiciency and utility.
The base 10 and the standards 11 together with the rod 24 and the resilient members 21 are of metal, while the base frame 12, the upper frame 16 and bars 19 are preferably of wood, but the whole device may be of metal if preferred.

The improved device may be employed wherever devices of this character are reuired, but it will be found especially uscul in wire mills to receive the wire from the rolls and upon which it mav be wound for shipment or storage.
Having thus described my invention, what is claimed as new is 1. A reel comprising base members having longitudinal guideways, a standard rising from said base, an upper member movable freely upon said standard, blocks slidable in said guideways, arms pivoted at one end to said blocks and at the other end to said upper member, and yieldable means exerting constant outward force against said arms.
2. A reel comprising base members having longitudinal guideways, a standard rising from said base, an upper member mov able upon said standard, blocks slidable in said uideways, arms pivoted at one end to said locks and at the other end to said upper" member, and springs operating to move said arms outwardly.
3. A reel comprising a base, a standard, an upper member freely movable on the standard, arms pivotally connected to said upper member and movable upon the base, spring members crossing each other and slidably engaging the standard at their crossing points, and means for connecting the free ends of said spring members to the arms.
