To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, TVILLIAM J. LESTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kearny, in the county of Hudson. and
,State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful. Improvements in Reducing or Regulating Valves; and I do hereby de clare the following to be a full, clear, and
exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertai-ns to make and use the same, reterence being had to the accom anying drawings, and to characters of re'ci'ence marked thereon, which form a part of this specifi' cation. I v
The present invention relates, generally, to improvements in valve mechanism; .and the invention refers, more particularly, to a novel construction of reducing valve for controlling and regulating the volume of fluid passed there-through.
' The present invention has for its principal object to provide a simple, easilyoperate'd and efl'ective construction of reducing valvemechanism adapted to permit the passage therethrough of a stream of fluid, the volume of which maybe regulated in various degrees from the maximum volume to the minimum volume easilyand quickly, and
-in addition to such regulation thev said valvemechanism is constructed to .shut-ofithe stream of fluid entirely when it is so desired.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a reducing valve-mechanism for controlling a stream-of fluid passedv therethrough which is so constructed as to readily indicate exteriorly of the valve-mechanism the proportionate degree of regulation of said. stream of fluid between the given maximum and minimum volumes which said valve mechanism will pass. a
,Other objects of the present invention, not at this time more particularly enumerated, will be clearly understood from the following detailed description of my present invention.
With the various objects of the present in vention in View, the said invention-consi ts in the novel construction of reducing valve mechanism hereinafter set forth; and, furthermore, the inventionconsists-in the-novel arrangements and combinations of the various devices and parts as well as in the details of the construction thereof, all of which will be hereinafter more tully'described in the following specification, and
then finally embodied in the clauses of the claims which are appended to and which tor n an essential part of this specification. The invention is clearly illustrated inthe accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is an elevation of one side of the novel construction of reducing valve mecha nism made according to and embodying the principles of the present invention; F ig.

which passes through said perforation or opening 10 of said cap-member 9 so'as to be exteriorly presented above said cap-member. The upper free end of said spindle-portion 15 is provided with a reduced and squaredshank 16 upon which is secured, in any suitable manner, a handle-member 17. Sur:
rounding the interiorly disposed portion of said spindle-portion 15 is a coil or compression spring 18, one end of which is seated within said socket-portion 1 1 of said capmember 9, and'the other end of which bears against the end wallof said gate-member 12 to maintain the same properly seatedand operatively arranged in connection with said gate casing. The walls 4 of said gatecasing are provided with an inlet passage or opening 19 and an outlet passage or opening 20, the latter being oppositely disposed with relation to the former, but being'lo- -cated in a horizontal plane below the hori- -zontal plane of the former. The said inletv and outlet openings or passages respectively communicate with the respective open ends 3 of said valve-casing 2. The walls 13 of said gate-member 12 are provided, with a plurality of intake perforations or openings 21, 21. 21", 21, and 21, and the same respectively decreasing in size or diameter, and extending around -said wall 13=so as to lie in the plane of said inletopening'or passage 19, with which they may be respectively regis tered so as to establish vcommunication be tween the chamber or well 14 of said gatemember and one open end of said valvecasing 2. In like manner said walls 13 0f said gate-member 12are further provided with a plurality of exit perforations or openings 22, 22 22*, 22, and 22, and thesame above described are so disposed with rela-' tion to each other that the openings or permassi "be variously controlled between a minimum and maximum volume, according to the size of the selected opening of-said series of per- -'forationsor openings. registered with the respective inlet and outle't' passages 19 and 20. 'From the'abo've description of the present invention it will be evident that; the present invention provides-a very simple reducing or regulating valve-mechanism, which affords a quick and easy means for reducing or regulating the volume of fluid desired to be passed through said valve, or for shuttingoif entirely the passage of fluid therethrough, 'and owing to the convenient indicating de-- vices connected with said valve-mechanism it may be quickly and easily ascertained, by a glance at the exterior of said valve, in just what position the regulating gate-member'is set at any given time, or in the operation of the gate-member itself.
I am aware i that some changes may be made in the various-details and arrangement of the devices and parts of theprcscnt invention without departing'from the scope thereof. Hence, ll do not limit my invention to the exact arrangements and combinations of the various devices and parts as herein set forth, and as illustrated in'the accomtable gate-member mounted within said panying drawings, nor do Iconfine myself to the exact details of the construction of the said parts. i

1. In a device of the kind described, a
valve casing having open ends, a gate-casing; formed in connection with said WllVeC21S-- ing, said gate-easing being provided with an inlet passage and an outlet passage, a rotagate-casiiig, said gate-member. being provided with a series of variously sized intake perforations adapted to beregistered with said inlet passage and a series of variously sized exit perforations adapted to be registered with said outlet-passage, intake per forations "and exit perforations of corresponding size being adapted to-be selectively registered respectively with said inlet passage and said outlet passage of said gatecasing, said gate-inemberbeing provided with a chamber. with which saidrespective "series of perforations communicate, and
means exteriorly'disposed of said valve casing and said gate-casing for rotating said gate-member.
2. In a device ofthe kind described, a valve-casing havingopen ends. a gate-casing formed'in connection with said valve-casing,
said gate-casing being provided with air-inlet passage and an outlet-passage, a rotatable gatemeinber' mountedwithin said gatecasing, sa d gate-member being provided with a series of variously sized 1ntake per-' forations adapted to be registered with said inlet passage and a series of variously sized exitperforations adapted to be registered with said outlet-passage. intake perforations and exit perforations of corresponding "size being adapted to be selectively registered respectively with said inlet passage and said outlet passage of said gate-casing, said gatemember being provided with a chamber with which said respective series of perforations communicate, ahandle memher, means for connecting said handle-member with said gate-member, and means with which said handle-member maybe registered to indicate the regulated position of said gatemember. 3.
