COMPOSITION FOR TEMPERZNG STEEL.

T all whom it may concern Be it known that I, TRUMAN A. HOUSER,
' a citizen of the United States, residing at freely Dorranceton, in the count-y of Luzerne and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Compositions for Temperingfiteel, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the method of tempering steel and the composition of matter used in said method and has for its principal-.object the provision of a method by which steel may be made harder and tougher at a lower heat than by the methods now in use and furthermore, to provide means by which, the tempered steel will not check or crack and will not scale after being treated.
In the practice of my invention, I employ a composition of matter comprising the following ingredients in the proportions named, viz: cyanid of potassium 4 ounces, sal-ammoniac 3 ounces, borax 3 ounces, saltpeter 2 ounces, sal-soda 2 ounces, blue vitriol 2 ounces, table salt 1 ounce, and rosin ounce.
These ingredients are powdered and theroughly mixed while in their powdered state.
In the practice of my method in treating carbon or tool steel I first heat the steel to a. dark cherry red. I then apply the compound hereabove described to the heated steel by sprinkling it thereon and return the steel to the fire until the compound flows over the steel. After this I dip the steel in water and draw the temper. I then try the temper with a file and repeat the above operation until the temper is satistac tory. After the proper temper has been reached I cool the steel in water.
To harden taps, reamers, dies and the like, I apply the composition above described after heating the tool to a cherry red. The tool is then returned to the tire and heated until it is a dark cherry red. I then draw a temper to the toughness desired, and cool in water.

advantages of this method is that carbon steel can be tempered at a lower heat and made harder and tougher than by any other method, and furthermore, that steel treated with this composition will not scale.
In using my improved composition for the treatment of alloy or high speed steel, 1 first heat the part of the tool to be tempered to a high red heat.- I then cover the tool wit the composition and reheat the tool to as high a heat as possible without causing "it to melt. The tool is then removed from the fire and brushed off and I then place it in a bath of fish oil keeping the tool in motion in the oil to prevent the oil from becoming heated immediately surrounding the tool. In place of oil if desired, the temper may be secured by submitting the tool to .a strong 7 65 blast of cooled air,
By this method oftreating highspeed 01'- alloy steel, it is apparent that a lower heat than by the method in present use may be employed and at the same time the steel will be harder and tougher and furthermore, the steel will not check or crack and will not scale.
Having thus described my invention what- I claim is 1. A composition of matter for tempering steel, consisting of a certain quantity of cyanid of potassium and smaller quantities f borax, saltpeter, Sal-soda, blue vitriol,
table salt, and rosin.
2. A composition of matter for tempering steel consisting of cyanid of potassium 4: ounces, sal-ammoniac 3 ounces, boraX 3 ounces, saltpeter 2 ounces, Sal-soda 2 ounces, blue vitriol 2 ounces, table salt 1 ounce, and rosin 1} ounce.
