Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed September 23, 1912. Serial No. 721,854.
Patented Mar. 18, 1913.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS J. GILL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Stockton, in the county of San Joaquin and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Signs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in signs, and especially illuminated signs; and the object. of the invention is to provide a sign of this kind which shall be simple and inexpensive in COHStIHCtlOIlyflHd which can be read by persons approaching from either side thereof. 7
\Vith these objects in view, the invention consists in a novel combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specificationFigure 1 is a plan View of the sign, partly in section; Fig. 2 is a cross-section on the line 22 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the sign, and Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section on the line 44 of Figs. 1 and 2. 7
As will be seen in the drawing, the main body of the sign is an elongated, rectangular inclosure formed of front and rear walls 7, and a top 7, said parts being fastened together with spacers 11 on each end, on the top by angles 13, and on the bottom by angles 9 and supports 2 for the lamps 1. This makes a light and strong construction for the main body of the sign. Any suitable material may be used for the parts 7 and 7*.
The walls 7 are stenciled, as indicated at 15, to form the letters of the sign, in view of which a double sign is-had, the letters being displayed in front and at the rear. The openings forming the letters are covered by wire screen 10 placed against the inner surface of the walls 7, the same being held by strips 10 fastened to'said walls on the insurface thereof, at the top and bottom and outside the letters.
'he lamp supports 2 extend transversely be t-w een be walls 7, and rest on the horizonand the ends'of the lamp supports. ,Three lamp supports are shown, one being located midway between the ends of the sign, and one at each end. The intermediate support carries a lamp on each side, and the end supports carry each one lamp. A greater number of supports and lamps may be provided for larger signs. The lamps, 1 are secured to the supports 2 midway between the front and rear walls 7, in any suitable manner, and they are all set horizontally, thereby presenting a larger area of lighting surface. In the inclosure, at the top thereof, is mounted a concavo-convex reflector 14. From the concave side of the reflector depends a partition 8 which extends throughout the entire length of the incl'osure, midway between. thefront and rear walls 7 thGIGOfffild terminates a short distance above thelamps 1. The light from the lamps strikes the partition, which, latter throws the light out through the letter openings 15 in the front and rear Walls 7. The light which is cast on the reflector 14: is partly cast on the partition, as well as reflected through the bottom of the inclosure to the side-walk, said bottom being open.
At 3 are indicated porcelain insulators which are mounted on the walls 7 where the feed wires 4 connect with the feed wires 5 and 6 of the lamps 1. i
A sign constructed as herein described is simple and cheap, and makes an attractive display. The wire screen 10 sharpens the outlines of the letters, and also keeps flies. birds, insects and foreign materials out of the inclosurel The light-is equally distributed over both faces of the sign, which are thus brilliantly illuminated. The interior mechanism is fully protected from wind and rain. I
The preferred embodiment of the invention has been shown but it will be understood that various minor changes in. the structural details may be made without a departure from the spirit and scope of the invent-ion as hereinafter claimed.
I claim:
