To (1/6 ur/zom it may 0011mm Be it known that Lll HLLIAM r1. Boron, a citizen of tne United States, residing at Jackson, in the county of Hinds and State of Mississippi, have invented a new and useful Lawn-Swing, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention aims to provide, in a swing comprising oppositely disposed chairs, movably mounted backs for the chairs, which backs may be placed in parallelism with the seats of the chairs, to form a couch.
A further object of the invention is to provide a swing having oppositely disposed chairs, the backs of which may readily be reversed, and be lowered into parallelism with the seats, to form a couch.
YVith the foregoing and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings,Figure 1 shows the invention in side elevation; Fig. 2 is a top plan; Fig. 3 is a side elevation, showing the backs of the chair portions of the swing disposed in couch-forming position; and Fig. 4: is a fragmental side clevation, showing one of the backs reversed from the position shown in Fig. 1.
In carrying out the invention there is provided a supporting structure comprising a frame 1, the frame 1 including side bars 2, connected by slats 3, certain of which, denoted by the numeral i, are removable, the slats 4 being adapted to rest in notches 5 in the side bars 2 of the frame 1. The supporting structure further includes suspension members (3, preferably taking the form of bars, united by means of pivot elements 7 with the frame 1, the supporting members 6 being adapted for connection with an overhead support.
The pivot elements '7 are connected with the lower ends of back supports 8, ordinarily taking the form of bars, these back supports 8 being equipped with longitudinally extended slots 9. The back supports 8 constitute parts of connected, oppositely disposed chairs, each chair including a seat 10, connected with one suspension member 6, as shown at 11, the seat 10 being connected likewise with the back support 8 as shown at 12. The invention, if desired, may include tie bars 14, connected as shown at 15 with the suspension members 6, and as shown at 16, with the back supports 8. The seats 10 carry upon their rear edges, stops 20, having functions which will be set forth hereinafter.
Each chair includes a back, denoted generally by the numeral 21. Upon one face, the back 21 is upholstered, as shown at 22, and upon the other, opposite face, the back is slatted, or otherwise fashioned to withstand hard usage, as shown at 28. It is to be understood that the chair includes a pair of the back supports 8, and between these back supports 8 of the chair, the back 21 is mounted for sliding movement longitudinally of the back supports, and for pivotal movement with respect to the back supports. To eifect this end, the back 21 is provided adjacent one end, and upon its edges, with pins 24 or like projections, adapted to slide in the slots 9 of the back supports 8.
The manner in which the suspension members 6 are upheld, so as to provide a swinging movement for the chairs, is largely immaterial. If desired, the upper ends of the suspension members 6 may be connected with a frame 25 of any desired sort, by means of the pivot elements 26.
Presupposing that the parts are positioned as shown in Fig. 1, the operation of the device is as follows: The removable slats at of the frame 1 are displaced from the notches 5, these slats 1 being terminally sup ported by the seats 10, as shown in Fig. 3. The lower ends of the backs 21 are then seized, and pulled inwardly, the pins 24: riding downwardly in the slots 9 of the back supports 8, until the backs 21 are disposed in approximate parallelism with respect to the seats 10, the backs 21 resting upon the removable slats i, as shown in Fig. 3, so as to form a couch. Obviously, if desired, the pins 24. may be permitted to rest in the lower ends of the slots 9, the free ends of the backs 21 being swung upwardly. Under such circumstances, as clearly shown in Fig. 4, the slats sides 23 of the backs 21 will be outwardly disposed. It is thus possible to present, for wear, either an upholstered surface, or a more efficient, wear-resisting surface, as the operator may desire. When the ne 1., u
