Specification of Letters Patent.
To llfwhom z't may con/rem Be 1t known that I, CARLD. BATES, a citizen of the United States, .residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of- Illinois, have invented a new and useful Incandescent-Lamp-Globe Changer, of which the following is a specification.
My inventlonrelatesto devices-used to attach and detach electric light bulbs located at a considerable distance above the Hoor and without the use of a ladder.
The objects of my improvements are first, to make a device which is adjustable to any size bulb; second, to provide anovel arrangement of coupling the sections of the pole; third, to arrange the device so that it can be used as either a stiff pole or rod or a pole with a flexible joint; fourth, to make the bulb gripping fingers of an improved construction; fth, to make a cheap, simple and durable device and other featuresv` to become apparent from the description to follow.
My invention comprises a plurality of flat metal spring lingers slightly curved se cured in the end of a pole or rod so arranged' as to normally spring apart far enough to it over the largest size electric bulb. A ring is slipped up around the its twisting capacity. YThe several sections of the pole are detachably secured together by means of angular off-sets 'on the abutting ends of the pole.
To describemy invention so that-others versed in the art to which it pertains may make and use same, I have illustrated it on the accompanying sheet of drawing forming a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation partly in section of a device embodying my invention; Fi 2, is a similar view showing the ,device adjusted to a different position; Fig. .3, is a section on line 3 3 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4, is a section on line 4-4 of Fig. 1. The pole 5 is made up of several detachable sections as 5a, 5", 5 and 5d, the abutting ends of which are provided with stepped 0E- sets or shoulders which in turn are surrounded by snugly titting collars or sleeves 6a, 6b and 6. T o4 secure the collars 6a, 6b and 6c in proper position they are secured to one of the adjacent ends of the pole sections in any desired manner as by rivets .7. The purc pose of the shouldered abutting ends of the pole sections is to lock them rigidly together in respect to a twisting or turning action vbut have them free to separate by a longitudinal pull.
The pole .5 has secured to its upper, end one end of a coiled spring 8, the other end of which is secured to the tip 9, thus flexibly connecting pole 5 to tip 9 and at the same time substantially. rigidly connecting them in respect to a twisting .or turning motion. The tip 9 comprises a wood block 10 which is driven into a sleeve or tubing 11. For some purposes itis desirable to lock the tip 9 rigidly to pole 5 and for this purpose I provide a split sleeve 12 which is somewhat longer than the spring 8, to fit snugly over the exterior of tubing 11. and upper end of pole 5. The sleeve 12 is split on a spiral linetoeect a better grip on the coperating parts.
The tubing 11 is provided with an annular bead 13 which serves as a bearing for the ring or collar14 which its loosely about the tubing 11 and is provided with an ear 14 to which is securedone end of a cord 15. The cord 15 hangs down. to within reach of the operator whopulls down on same when it isdesired to ex the tip 9 as seen in Fig. 2.
By this construction the operator cantlex the tip 9 so it will extend at a right angle to the pole 5 or even atan acute angle if found necessary.-
The lamp gripping device 16 comprises .the ilat spring lmembers 17 which are rigidly secured in tip 9 between the tubmg 11 and Patented Mar. 18,\1913.
